Random thoughts while trying to figure out what day of the week it is: OK, so it’s Tuesday — even though it seems like Monday and Monday seemed like Sunday. What all this means is it’s either one day closer to the end of the baseball season for the Cubs and White Sox or one day closer to the start of the NFL season for the Bears — depending on your allegiance to teams, sports, etc.
* With losses on Labor Day, the Cubs (beaten by the woeful Miami Marlins 4-3 at Wrigley Field) and Sox (trounced by the New York Yankees 9-1 at Yankee Stadium) remained on pace to finish last in their respective divisions.
* Other than the Marlins, the only team with a losing record that the Cubs play are the Milwaukee Brewers, who are one game ahead of the Cubs in the National League Central. The Cubs have three home games and four games at Milwaukee vs. the Brewers. The rest of the schedule is Cincinnati (three games), Pittsburgh (seven), Atlanta (three) and St. Louis (three). On the bright (?) side, the Cubs (58-79) need to go 5-20 or better to avoid 100 defeats.
* The Sox, who trail Minnesota by four games in the American League Central, do face the Twins for three games. Other than that, the only game they have remaining against a losing team is Toronto. After the Yankees, for the Sox it’s Baltimore (four games), Detroit (six — three home, three away), Cleveland (six — four home, two away), Toronto (at U.S. Cellular Field) and Kansas City (four). On the bright (?) side, the Sox (56-80) need to go 7-19 or better to avoid 100 defeats.
* Broadcaster Ken “Hawk” Harrelson called the fourth inning of the Sox’ loss Monday to the Yankees “the most embarrassing that I have called.” The Yanks scored eight, thanks to a couple of errors (catcher Josh Phegley dropping a foul pop and first baseman Adam Dunn making a bad throw to second base on an attempted double play), a couple of walks and seven hits. No one can accuse Harrelson of understatement, although he likely has witnessed worse and his reaction could be the cumulative effect the 2013 season has had on him. Either that, or he was upset about not getting a tee time he wanted for the day after the season is over.
* Speaking of Sox catchers, Tyler Flowers homered Sunday in what turned out to be his last at-bat of the season. He is to undergo surgery on his throwing shoulder. Meaning his season ends with 10 home runs, 24 runs batted in, a .195 batting average in 256 at-bats. Not good numbers. His on-base percentage was .247. Again not good (OK, worse than that). If it’s any conslation (and the guess here is that it isn’t — at least for Sox fans), Phegley has a .223 on-base percentage in 145 at-bats.
Here is where to go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (and, yes, the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com labored on Labor Day, although something says they might have had the video of September Playboy Playmate Bryiana Noelle already on hand):
