Monday meanderings: The Sunday sports scene was one of life and death. Figuratively and literally. The American Football Conference and National Football Conference title games provided the New England Patriots and New York Giants emerging as the Super Bowl XLVI matchup on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis. Colts fans who were hoping for a Manning in the game will have to settle for Peyton’s younger brother Eli of the Giants to fill the role.
* Joe Paterno, the legendary Penn State football who came under fire recently for not doing something to stop Jerry Sandusky’s alleged child sex abuse and was let go by the university after a grandy jury report, died at age 85. Presumably from cancer, although some folks were quick to note he lost his will to live. Yes, it was a sad ending to Paterno’s life. As if there was going to be a happy one with clown cars or something if he had lived to actually testify in a Sandusky trial?
* San Francisco 49ers receiver Kyle Williams, son of Chicago White Sox general manager Ken Williams, fumbled on a punt return that led to the game-winning field goal in overtime for the Giants. Normally pessimistic Sox fans will see that as an omen for the 2012 season. Or at least something to talk about at SoxFest.
* Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and fiancee Kristin Cavallari was expecting. As in a child, not a Super Bowl berth any time soon.
* No word whether the reality television personality’s pregnancy is another example of a breakdown in Cutler’s protection. Hey, at least this one can’t be blamed on the offensive line.
* Some folks may view the impending parenthood for Cutler and Cavallari as something that people can make light of by joking about Cutler getting in the end zone. The department of good taste at elliottharris.com will not allow anything like that on this site.
* No word whether Cutler was blindsided by the pregnancy. If nothing else, he should be fairly familiar in that regard.
* Some folks may wonder if Cutler saw all that coming. This space will not stoop to that level of comment.
* Word is Heidi Klum and husband Seal are separating. Now for those in the audience who think this has no possibly link to the sports world, think again. Seal was the featured performer at the grand opening of Chicago’s ESPN Zone (which closed not too long ago). Plus you have to think at some point NBA MVP Derrick Rose will be involved in a project that will have the title “Touched by a Rose” — the name of one of the songs Seal performed that night. Plus mention of the marriage allows running a photo of Heidi without it being considered gratuitous. Not that there’s anything wrong with an occasional gratuitous photo here and there. Mostly here.
Speaking of gratuitous, here is another entry for Playboy’s Playmate of the year 2012. Today’s candidate is Miss April, Jacyln Swedberg. Voting is going on at playboy.com.
Yes, the editorial staff at elliottharris.com is aware that the deadline for the Pulitzer Prizes has passed for the year. Undeterred, we are putting together the portfolio for Public Service honors (cyberspace division) for next year, and this might as well go in it.
Another day, another Hooters Dream Girl 2012 hopeful. Today we have Casey Luckey:
