Monday meanderings: Notre Dame vs. Alabama for the college football championship of the galaxy. On a Monday night? Shouldn’t those student-athletes have been studying — something other than playbooks — rather than prepare for the Bowl Championship Series title game? One of these years the NCAA is going to have to admit it functions as the minor leagues for the NFL and NBA in a major way and start to pay players.
* If the NCAA is concerned about paying players causing financial problems at universities, it might want to take a look at coaches’ salaries. But if the NCAA did that, it might have to take a look at athletic department officials’ salaries, too. Something says athletic directors would be disinclined to lower the wages of their coaches — and of themselves.
* Speaking of money matters, it was interesting to hear someone on radio Sunday complaining about ESPN’s integrity regarding the cable giant’s lack of coverage on the apparent end of the NHL lockout earlier in the day. The complaint might have been more meaningful if the station on which the complaint was lodged was not the same one that broadcasts Chicago Blackhawks games. Oh, wait. Radio and television are supposed to have integrity? Who knew?
* The best part about the NHL starting to play games? The folks who depend on income from those contests for a livelihood — no, not the owners or players — can start making some money again. Vendors, business establishments around hockey venues, etc. Not that those folks ever were a concern during the lockout. It’s never about the little guy — other than in the form of paying customers.
* The second-best part about the NHL starting to play games? The return of the Blackhawks Ice Crew. The lovely ladies have been cooling their heels (on their skates, no doubt). Yes, this is for those of us who have to ask what color is the blue line.
* Something says the Blackhawks will be able to fill the United Center. There are enough diehard hockey fans to accomplish that. The Hawks — and the rest of the NHL — has to hope the casual fan is not a casuality as far as purchasing tickets, merchandise, etc.
As promised, your humble correspondent went to the gym Sunday. For three hours. You have no idea how exhausting that can be. Thankfully, I managed to remain hydrated during that time as I observed Chicago Crave tryouts at L.A. Fitness in Tinley Park, Ill.
Yes, that’s my idea of work — and a workout, thank you.
This was the second tryout for the Bikini Basketball Association team. Franchise owner/CEO Korie Kellogg was pleased with the turnout and with the quality of players who showed up.
We have video verification of my time well-spent. Here is some with more to follow before the next tryout event, which likely will be sometime in February. I should be recovered from spending all that time in the gym by then. Thank you for any concern in that regard.
As long as we’re talking about bikini (or even if we weren’t), that must mean it’s time for some more non-gratuitous videos. Indeed.
And for Blackhawks fans who have been missing their goal-scoring tune, here you go (this should even work for those who are not hockey fans):
