Midweek musings: First of all, can someone explain how we already are at Wednesday? It is? Really? Really. Here’s how some of us figured that out: The Chicago Bears ended their season Sunday with a 26-24 victory at Detroit. They fired coach Lovie Smith on Monday. They held a press conference with general manager Phil Emery on Tuesday. Today is the day after that.
* OK, so that means yesterday was Tuesday (provided that you are reading this on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013). An abundance of New Year’s Day bowl games with Big Ten teams participating in five of them (don’t ask me which ones other than the Rose Bowl). And losing in four: Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Purdue. And winning in one: Northwestern.
* Northwestern’s victory is the first bowl triumph for the school since the 1949 Rose Bowl. Meaning some rich alum should be commissioning a bronze larger-than-life statue of coach Pat Fitzgerald any minute now.
* Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl against Florida State ended up the mismatch many people predicted. The 31-10 loss ended the Huskies’ 12-game winning streak. Not to mention any thoughts of NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch being a legitimate contender for the 2013 Heisman Trophy.
* As someone who had a little trouble waking up in time for Emery’s press conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday, I watched and listened as best I could. Before falling back to sleep, I don’t think I heard anyone ask whether Smith still would be gone if the Bears had reached the postseason. Something says nothing short of a Super Bowl would have had Smith back with the Bears for 2013.
Speaking of the Bears, return specialist/receiver Devin Hester clarified his Monday remarks about possibly not playing anymore, saying Tuesday on Twitter: Let me make myself clear the reason why I feel like retiring has nothing to do with Lovie Smith Getting fired.
Someone recently asked me about Anna Kournikova. Ah, yes. The former tennis standout who was a frequent subject when I wrote the Quick Hits column in the Chicago Sun-Times — with the high point of all that being able to interview her when she was in town for a tennis exhibition a few years ago.
So what’s up with Anna? Not much. She’s living in Miami with longtime boyfriend Enrique Iglesias. Or possibly, fiance Enrique Iglesias.
As happens from time to time, it was reported that Anna was seen wearing an engagement ring. Maybe yes, maybe no. Of such things, I don’t know. Regardless, a happy new year to Anna and Enrique.
And maybe one of these days I’ll make it down to Miami for the tennis lessons that she said she would be happy to provide. And, yes, we will do our best to stay abreast of Anna’s activities.
Speaking of tennis and engagements and such things, tennis ace Maria Kirilenko is engaged to hockey star Alex Ovechkin. The Washington Captials standout announced on Twitter: “We are engaged !!!!!!! )))))))))”
At least someone has been spending the NHL lockout wisely. She previously dated tennis player Igor Andreev before hooking up with Ovechkin a little more than a year ago.
With the Chicago Bulls out of town until Jan. 7, the Chicago Luvabulls have some well-deserved time off. Especially for the Luvabulls who traveled to the Netherlands over the holidays — on business. They performed, and we can only assume it was a Dutch treat for basketball fans there.
Here is an interview with Luvabulls co-captain Erika from their visit abroad:
And here is something from the Luvabulls photo shoot a couple of months or so ago:
Random videos always have a place here. Normally, these videos consist of attractive females. We will make an exception today for the exceptional play of the Outback Bowl by South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney:
