No Doubt, Cubs Fans Need to Be Committed

March 8, 2013 @ No Comments

Some things are too easy to mock. Case in point: the Chicago Cubs. Not concerning their dearth of recent World Series appearances (last one was 1945 vs. the Detroit Tigers. Not concerning their dearth of World Series titles (last one was 1908). No, instead it’s the team’s latest ad campaign whose focus is the word “committed.” The campaign starts Friday (March 8) in conjunctions with the sale of single-game tickets. There’s little question that the team has fans who definitely are committed to the team, including some who ought to be committed — to an appropriate facility — because of the team. Told you some things are too easy to mock.

Maybe next time Lariyah Daniels will wear this to “Sports & Torts.”

* Speaking of things Cubs-related, the Bleed Cubbie Blue 2013 Annual is available. Writers from the SB Nation Cubs blog Bleed Cubbie Blue provide content for the work that includes a season preview, reviews of minor-league prospects and more. Al Yellon is the book’s editor and Miriam Romain associate editor. You can obtain the book via Amazon.com by clicking here.

* Still speaking of things Cubs-related, longtime Chicago multi-media threat George Castle chronicles a world in which the team wins a World Series. And, yes, it is a work of fiction. Titled Alou Makes the Catch: An Alternate History of the Chicago Cubs, the e-book ponders how the franchise mght have been different if it hadn’t traded Lou Brock, if Ray Kroc had bought the team in the 1970s, if Greg Maddux had remained with the team rather than exit for Atlanta and if Moises Alou had made the catch in the 2003 National League Championship Series, among other things. Castle comes up with a world Cubs fans might not recognize. The book is available by clicking here.

* Meanwhile, back to the topic of commitment, the Chicago White Sox signed left-hander Chris Sale to a five-year deal. Sale is 23. Even so, any team signing a pitcher to a five-year deal might want to have its front office committed. That’s a long time — especially for a pitcher and even moreso for one whose durability already is in question.

* Still speaking of commitment, Michael Jordan has applied for a marriage license with fiancee Yvette Prieto in Florida. The couple has until May 9 to use the license. At least the Charlotte Bobcats owner doesn’t have to worry about his team being in the postseason and conflicting with a May wedding date.

* Speaking of marriage, Cubs icon Ernie Banks, former Chicago Bears defensive end Richard Denter and former Bears Brendon Ayanbadejo and Hunter Hillenmeyer have signed a letter supporting same-sex marriage in Illinois. Of course, there will be people outraged by these endorsements. May the marital-relations department at elliottharris.com suggest that those people opposed to same-sex marriage not marry someone of the same gender.
