Midweek musings: President Barack Obama has made his tourney picks. His Final Four teams: Louisville, Indiana, Ohio State and Florida. No president has won an NCAA tournament pool without winning Ohio. Oh, wait. That’s something left over from the presidential election and has nothing to do with basketball. “For the championship I’m going back to the Big Ten,” he said Wednesday in a taped interview on ESPN. “I think this is Indiana’s year.” His women’s picks? Baylor, Connecticut, Notre Dame and California in the Final Four — with his entire bracket to be revealed Friday.
* Speaking of the NCAA tournament, some might think we are doing so merely to justify running the photo of Nikki Leigh, the May 2012 Playboy Playmate in University of Louisville attire (or something like that). A reminder to those out there in cyberspace: The editorial staff at elliottharris.com doesn’t need to justify running just about anything it so desires.
* While we are on the topic of college basketball, a fellow who knows far more than I do about the sport (OK, most people actually know more) says to look for Bucknell to win two games in the NCAA tournament. That would mean beating Butler in the opening round and then most likely Marquette. Of course, this is of minimal consequence to most of us — unless Bucknell coach Dave Paulsen ends up next season coaching Northwestern.
* Now that the Dominican Republic has defeated Puerto Rico to win the World Baseball Classic, that means the Major League Baseball team with the most players on its roster from the Dominican Republic will have homefield advantage for the World Series? No? No.
* Speaking of the WBC …. OK, not really. Was anyone? Other than perhaps the folks televising the games on MLB Network.
* Speaking of big-league baseball, Chicago White Sox left-hander John Danks may be left off the roster when the season starts. He could land on the disabled list. He gave up 10 runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings Tuesday against Cincinnati. Danks is coming off ofseason shoulder surgery. Not coming off of it well, allowing 21 runs in 10 innings. Without a healthy Danks, the Sox rotation very well will be hurting.
* Speaking of the disabled list, that’s where Chicago Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart is going to start the season because of a strained left quad. The Cubs also have shut down pitcher Scott Baker, who is trying to return from Tommy John surgery. “Right now, I’m choosing to be optimistic and hope for the best,” Baker said. Which qualifies him to sound like a Cubs fan.
So today is Wednesday (provided that you are reading this on March 20, 2013, or a subsequent Wednesday). Which means the anticipation is growing for another episode of “Sports & Torts” co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris on talkzone.com. The highly acclaimed interview program (well, it is held in such high esteem in the Spada and Harris households as well as reportedly elsewhere) will have freshly minted Playboy Playmate (Miss April 2013) Jaslyn Ome on the show.
It doesn’t get much better than that. Well, it does — but only slightly. Jaslyn is scheduled to be on the show via Skype. To have her as an in-studio guest would be ideal. Hard to believe she would rather be in California enjoying the warmth there rather than be in Chicago with its winter weather.
Here is where we go for non-gratuitous video (mainly because it is extremely difficult for the editorial staff at elliottharris.com to classify anything as gratuitous):
