The great thing about sleeping through part of the televised opening ceremonies of the 2014 winter Olympic Games was knowing they would be replayed. So, of course, some of us who dozed off during the festivities from Sochi, Russia, did tune in for the rebroadcast. And, of course, some of us (OK, namely your humble correspondent) dozed off during the second airing.
Such is life even when some of us (OK, maybe merely yours truly) slept for most of the day Friday in an effort to fight off whatever winter malady seems to be sapping energy.
So it’s not clear — at least to me — how the Russians handled the history of their country and whether it included memorable moments of misery that many suffered (and not always survived) during the course of their grand and glorious past.
Anyway, the winter Games have begun. In fact, some of the competition was held Thursday before the opening ceremonies. Which doesn’t make sense to me, but the International Olympic Committee didn’t ask for my opinion. If the IOC had, I would have suggested a locale other than a repressive Russia as host.
Oh, well.
Let the Games begin — political and otherwise. Right now, I think rather than watch the rest of the replay of the opening ceremonies, I’ll look into getting more sleep. Something says if there were an Olympic competition for sleeping in recent days, I just might be a medal contender.
