On Guards: Epiphanny Prince, Derrick Rose

After taking a break for the Olympic Games in London, the WNBA Chicago Sky returned to action on Friday (Aug. 17). The extended break did not help the team end an extended losing streak, as the Atlanta Dream defeated the Sky 82-76 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

Lovely Lariyah Daniels always is welcome around here.

The loss was the fifth in a row for the Sky (8-10), which started the season 7-1. Sky guard Epiphanny Prince returned for her first game since June 16 and scored a team-high 16 points. She hit a three-point field goal on her first shot of the game to reach 1,000 career points. Teammate Sylvia Fowles aded 13 points, including seven free throws to give her 465 for her career and surpass Candice Dupree (459) for the franchise lead in that category.

More significant stats for the game: 11 assists and 21 turnovers for the Sky.

Forward Angel McCoughtry had a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds for the Dream (10-10).

“Atlanta had 52 points in the paint — that’s offensive rebounding, that’s penetration, that’s putbacks, that’s easy post feeds,” Sky coach Pokey Chatman said. “It’s glaring. I think the biggest thing was poise down the stretch. We had four possessions with turnovers. They got a little bit tougher and we didn’t handle that. We had three points in the last couple of minutes and then Piph scored that three, so six points in the last few minutes. So it wasn’t so much of Atlanta executing. They just came at us really, really hard, and I credit them; that’s how they play. And we didn’t respond.”

A team that early in the season appeared well on the way to the first postseason appearance in Sky history hopes to regroup for Sunday’s game at Washington.

Asked what the Sky needs to do to assure a postseason berth, Prince said, “We need to execute better. I felt like we gave up too many points in the first half. They had 44 points in the first half, I think. We need to defend a lot better and play with a sense of urgency in every game.”

Speaking of Chicago basketball teams with an injured guard coming back from injury, Bulls star Derrick Rose is the subject of an adidas documentary “The Return of D Rose” that is to debut next week on the adidas Basketball Facebook page.

Here is the trailer for the multi-part series:

Multi-talented Lariyah Daniels (there she is in the photo to the right) has the laest offering from Hessler — “Last Alive” — ready for public consumption.

The singer also is a model, bikini competitor, fitness guru and more.

In case there’s any confusion, she is the beautiful blond in the video (and for all those who think all this is intended as a rationalization for running some Lariyah video and photo, well, you could be right; not that that matters or rationalizing is necessary when it come to Lariyah, who is a favorite around here and elsewhere).

Enough of all this verbiage; let’s go to the video:
