One Strike From Elimination, Cards Strike Again

October 13, 2012 @ No Comments

As if the 2012 baseball season wasn’t tough enough for Chicago Cubs fans. At least they were going to gain some consolation with the St. Louis Cardinals being eliminated in Game 5 Friday (Oct. 12) of the best-of-five National League Division Series against the host Washington Nationals.

Another photo of Summer Rae? Why not.

A pair of three-run innings gave the Nationals a 6-0 lead after three innings and gave Cubs fans the realization that the Cardinals’ season would last only slightly longer than the Cubs’.

A winter of Cubs fan discontent would be less disontented with archrival Cardinals fans suffering — unlike 2011 when St. Louis won the World Series.

“Improbable” probably describes why Cubs fans may be more depressed today than at any time this season. Of course, some fans went to bed happy; the game didn’t end until 11:28 p.m. Chicago time.

St. Louis, which used comeback after comeback in its 2011 postseason success, was down to its last strike — twice actually — in the ninth inning. Not that the Cardinals hadn’t been there before. That was the situation last season, too. This time they overcame the largest deficit in an elimination game and rallied for four ninth-inning runs and a 9-7 victory.

Rookie shortstop Pete Kozma’s two-run single broke a 7-7 tie and sent St. Louis to San Francisco to play the Giants on Sunday in the National League Championship Series.

“Improbable” probably doesn’t begin to describe things.

The Cardinals showed the same tenacity they had in 2011 under manager Tony La Russa, who retired after the franchise’s 11th Series crown in ’11. Manager Mike Matheny made moves that paid off after taking starter Adam Wainwright out of the game after the right-hander had given up six runs. His bullpen moves all worked out, although closer Jason Motte allowed an eighth-inning run that gave the Nationals a seeminly insurmountable 7-5 lead after Cards second baseman Daniel Descalso’s homer in the top of the inning had closed the deficit to one run. His two-run single off the glove of shortstop Ian Desmond tied the game at 7.

For the record, the Cardinals are 6-0 in the last two postseason when they face elimination. Amont the highoights are Games 6 and 7 against the Teas Rangers in the World Series.

About the closest the Cubs would be to a position presence might have occurred when Matheny was doing an interview for MLB Netowrk. On the wall was a framed jersey. It belonged to current Cubs left fielder Alfosno Soriano.

Wait till next postseason, Cubs fans?

Likely longer.

OK, how about some video for those wanting to take their minds off the Cardinals being in the NLCS. Or for those celebrating the Cardinals being in the NLCS:

In that we had some Summer Rae on Friday, it seemed reasonable to have more today:
