Packers Benefit From Good Call on Bad Rule

Monday meanderings: And now a word on behalf of the NFL rule that prevented Dallas receiver Dez Bryant from being credited with a fourth-quarter reception in the Cowboys’ NFC semifinals defeat Sunday at Green Bay: Boooooooooooo!

* Not that overturning the initial call of a catch was wrong. It’s a bad rule. Oh, and any Chicago Bears fans whining that the reception should have counted, may we ask you to remember that that very same rule negated a Calvin Johnson touchdown catch that would have given the Detroit Lions a victory at Soldier Field in 2010. So you can’t have it both ways — no matter how much you might have wanted the Packers to lose.

* Speaking of the call with 4:06 left in the fourth quarter that went against the Cowboys in their 26-21 loss, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said: “Well, everybody knows the Calvin Johnson rule. I remember watching the film of that game and saying ‘How in the heck is that not a catch?’ But it’s been a few years since then, and you know you have to control the ball all the way to the ground, so when I saw the replay, I was confident that it would be an incomplete pass.”

* Speaking of Rodgers, let’s say Bryant’s catch had counted and the Cowboys had scored with a little less than four minutes to go and converted a two-point conversion for a 29-26 lead. Unless the game ended at that juncture, is there any reason to think the Dallas defense all of a sudden would be able to stop Rodgers from leading his team to more points that would at least tie the game, if not win it? As it was, the Packers ran out the clock. Tough to make much of a defense for the Dallas defense.

* Still speaking of Rodgers, it’s amazing how an immobile QB (hampered by an injured calf) was able to avoid the Dallas pass rush time and again. Maybe someone could show the video to Jay Cutler?

* Speaking of the Bears QB, with the news that Baltimore offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak plans to stay with the Ravens and not interview with the Bears, is that an indication that working with Joe Flacco on a winning team is preferable to becoming a head coach and having to deal with Cutler on a losing team? Asking for a friend.

* Speaking of coaches, Rex Ryan reportedly is the new coach of the Buffalo Bills. The recently fired coach of the New York Jets should know the AFC East. No word whether Ryan’s hiring might change QB Kyle Orton’s recent declaration that he was going to retire.

* For all those Bears fans who wrote off Julius Peppers after he signed with the Packers, he had six tackles, a sack and forced two fumbles (one recovered by Green Bay). Then again, had he remained with the Bears, he either would have been at home or vacationing somewhere. Which makes it extremely difficult to post such numbers.
