Packers’ Clements a Possibility as Bears Coach

January 3, 2013 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts (or what passes for such in the editorial offices of elliottharris.com): The Chicago Bears have asked for permission to talk to Green Bay offensive coordinator Tom Clements about their coaching vacancy, and the Packers have granted it. NFL rules preclude the Bears talking to him until after the Packers’ game Saturday. As if Bears fans needed another reason to root against Green Bay. As if former Notre Dame quarterback Clements needs more distractions than the Irish playing Alabama for a national championship.

The Chiefs may have had the worst record in the NFL in 2012, but at least they have cheerleaders.

* Speaking of the Bears, if they want to hire a coach with Mike Ditka-like qualities, they might want to consider recently fired Philadelpia Eagles coach Andy Reid. OK, more like Andy Reid’s mustache. OK, maybe not.

* Carlos Boozer scored a season-high 31 points, as the Chicago Bulls defeated the host Orlando Magic 96-94. Taj Gibson scored 21 in his first start of the season, as Joakim Noah missed the game with flu-like sympton. Who knew a player being sick could help cure the Bulls’ ills?

* The Chicago Cubs signed right-hander Edwin Jackson to a four-year deal on Wednesday (Jan. 2). He is looking forward to being with a team for more than a season. Cubs fans will wait to determine whether the feeling is mutual.

The Chicago Slaughter of the Indoor Football League is preparing for another season that opens Feb. 16 with its home opener scheduled for Feb. 24 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.

The 2012 Chicago Slaughter Special Ops Team definitely was all-female.

More importantly (well, it is to some of us), the team is accepting applications for its 2013 Chicago Slaughter Special Ops Team. Applications are due by Monday (Jan. 7). On its Facebook page, the Special Ops Team offers this:

This year we are looking to hire males for the team as well :) Please let us know if you’d like the application!
We are currently looking for friendly, responsible and energetic candidates to be part of The Chicago Slaughter promotional team!! Please message us and we’d be happy to send you the application.

Male Special Ops? Maybe the end of the world is near.

Anyway, Steve McMichael is set to return as the team’s coach, even if his time might be divided with his campaign to become mayor of Romeoville.

The former Chicago Bears defensive tackle obviously has Slaughter support for his political pursuit. In fact, the team is selling “Mongo for Mayor” T-shirts available for $12.

The T-shirts may be ordered by visiting the team’s site. To do that, you can click here. Or you can call (847) 310-3190.

The Slaughter’s home opener against the Titans of Cedar Rapids will have a “Red Out” theme with fans being encouraged to wear red to the game. After the contest, fans will be able to obtain autographs from players, coaches and dancers. And just possibly the Special Ops Team, too.

Time for some videos that some might consider gratuitous. And a reminder that as far as the editorial staff at elliottharris.com is concerned, there is very little — if anything — that would fall into the category of “gratuitous.” So here we go with the video:
