Philosophically Speaking of Bears, Bulls

January 4, 2012 @ No Comments

Philosophical questions arose Tuesday for the Chicago Bulls and Bears. For the Bears it concerned offensive coordinator Mike Martz and coach Lovie Smith. FOr the Bulls, it went something like this:

Luvabulls rookie Lauren L. enjoyed a winning debut.

What is the sound of one fan clapping?

The Bulls almost found out when they played the Atlanta Hawks at the United Center. Which is one way of saying there wasn’t much to cheer about for much of the game.

In fact, there was one more than one fan booing at one point as the Bulls fell behind by 19 against a team that had defeated the mighty Miami Heat the night before.

You can be assured that none of the booing came from members of Joakim Noah’s family — even if the Bulls center sat on the bench for the fourth quarter until coach Tom Thibodeau put him in for the team’s final offensive possession. Noah came through with a pass to Luol Deng for the game-winning basket. Noah’s fourth-quarter playing time: 4 seconds.

Yelena Noah (left) and Cecilia Rodhe were not dressed like this for the Bulls game. But they were similarly stunning.

“He was having a tough game, but Joakim stayed in the game mentally,” Thibodeau said. :It was a great pass and a great screen.”

One seen by his sister Yelena and mother Cecilia Rohde.

I suppose some out there in readerland or cyberspace (or whatever you want to call it) will say mentioning Noah so that running a photo of his mother and/or sister isn’t gratuitous is a cheap ploy. The editorial staff at elliottharris.com will counter by saying there is nothing cheap about it at all. Inexpensive perhaps.

Anyway, justification (though none really is needed, thank you) came after the game when lovely Cecilia spotted your humble correspondent wandering aimlessly in the bowels of the United Center. She approached. I wished her a happy new year. She reciprocated as we shook hands before she offered a kiss on the cheek (actually both cheeks).

Now it’s not every day that a former Miss Sweden and 1978 Miss Universe contestant reaches out to yours truly in that manner. Not even every other day that it happens. So when it does, it becomes duly noted. And if you don’t like it, you can turn the other cheek.

As for the Bears:

Ofensive coordinator Mike Martz resigns over philosophical differences? So he and coach Lovie Smith were philosophers when the Bears needed coaches? Where is Socrates when you need him?

* Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz departs over philosophical differences? Guessing he didn’t have horses to put before Descartes.

* Guessing that Bears’ philosophical difference with Martz did not include Platonic love.
* Guessing that Bears’ philosophical differences with Martz more a case of “can’t” rather than Kant.
* Guessing Bears’ philosophical differences more confusion than Confucius. Well, that’s what my fortune cookie said.
* Guessing that philosophical differences leading to Martz exit from Bears has to be considered Locke of the week.
* Bears quarterback coach Shane Day exits with Martz. Wondering if part of philosophical differences might have been like night and Day.
* Smith on Martz’s departure: “We both felt it was best to move in different directions.” Toward the goal line would be an improvement.

OK, so the preceding comments for the most part began as Twitter tweets. You can follow Elliott Harris at @elliottharris.
