Midweek musings: Big news doesn’t come much bigger than Prince Fielder. The free-agent first baseman, who is departing the Milwaukee Brewers, managed to avoid the radar of those who track player movement. So the big guy is headed to the Detroit Tigers. The Brewers will miss his bat. Just guessing most fans didn’t miss the lack of speculation on where Fieler would sign.
* The Tigers may have added Fielder, but the Chicago White Sox still have a left-handed bat of their own in Adam Dunn, who a year ago was considered a major acquisition. Sox fans can only hope Fielder does for Detroit what Dunn did for the Sox — namely create a lovely summer breeze with all his swings and misses (177 strikeouts for Dunn in 2011).
* The Chicago Bears’ search for a general manager to replace Jerry Angelo apparently is down to two. Kansas City Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery and New England Patriots director of pro personnel Jason Licht are their names. Given the football acumen of the search committee, it’s slightly surprising that the names are Beavis and Butthead/.
* The University of Texas is on the verge of giving football coach Mack Brown a four-year contract extension to keep him at least through 2020. Brown is 60 and earns $5.2 million with a $100,000 annual raise. No wonder Texas Gov. Rick Perry dropped out of contention for the Republican presidential nomination. Tough to run as a fiscal conservative with a contract like that.
