Sunday smorgasbord: So the Boston Red Sox are in the World Series after beating the visiting Detroit Tigers 5-2 Saturday night to capture the best-of-seven American League Championship Series 4-2. What this means is a team that finished last in its division in 2012 has reached baseball’s pinnacle event. And the only conclusion Cubs and White Sox fans can reach rationally is that next year right about now the Cubs and White Sox will be in the World Series, right? OK, the Miami Marlins-Houston Astros matchup would be another possibility. Sure it would.
* Speaking of being delusional (or dreaming or however you want to characterize it), the Red Sox are the former employer of Theo Epstein, the Cubs’ president of baseball operations. So all the Cubs need is for another team to hire him, wait a couple of years and then the Cubs will be in the World Series. No? Uh, no.
* Jake Peavy and Ryan Dempster in the World Series. On the same team. Not exactly sure what this means for the Boston Red Sox, but it does give Cubs and White Sox fans something to contemplate and/or a player or players to root for. Unless, of course, you feel like rooting against because they are not performing for your beloved team.
* From longtime Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully (the Cardinals eliminated L.A. in six games in the NLCS): “Losing feels worse than winning feels good.” And the deeper into the postseason you go, the worse it is when you do lose. If that’s any consolation to Cubs and White Sox fans after this season (and the guess here is that they will find minimal consolation — with the possibile exception of the Red Sox ousting the Tigers and if the Cardinals lose to Boston).
* Chicago Tribune sports scribe Paul Sullivan reports Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo is the latest possibility to fill the Cubs’ managerial vacancy. Hey, if that doesn’t work out and the Cubs still are looking for some sort of Red Sox connection, betcha Bobby Valentine is available. Hey, he’s the guy who made possible the worst-to-first scenario for Boston by providing the worst. Which somehow means he would be a great fit with the Cubs.
* Speaking of the Cubs managerial opening, given the names being floated around, the excitement level for Cubs fans of the tean finally naming a replacement to Dale Sveum may pale in comparison to any World Series game the Cardinals lose to Boston.
* Speaking of the Cardnals losing (which is an avocation for some Cubs fans regardless of how their team is doing), St. Louis will be looking to improve on its last Fall Classic competition with Boston. That was 2006 when the Red Sox swept the Cards in four games. Meaning, of course, the Cardinals can’t do any worse than that. Sorry, Cubs fans.
* And what would Sunday be without a mention of the Bears, who have a road game against the Washington Redskins? Of course, the purpose of this mention is merely to provide a reason for running a photo of a Redskins cheerleader. And, yes, a reminder that a mention really isn’t necessary because I get to call the shots. Which means any typographical errors, errors in fact or anything else is my responsibility. Then again, I’m fairly irresponsible, so I’m slightly confused why I’m still bothering to type this paragraph.
