Midweek musings: For the optimists in the audience, let the record show that Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose is one day closer to returning to playing. The pragmatists in the audience already realize he is one day closer to the end of his career. The pessimists in the audience already realize he is one day closer to the end of his career that does not include an NBA title with the Bulls.
* Speaking of the Bulls, they will play an exhibition game against the Washington Wizards on Oct. 12 in the first NBA contest in Brazil at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. If ever there was a road trip to make, that sure sounds like it.
* Bears returner man par excellence and receiver not-so-hot Devin Hester showed once again he can be adept at reversing his field. Well, as far as his words if not his actions on the football field. Having said at one point after coach Lovie Smith’s firing (although later clarified that the comment was not related to Smith) he might retire, Hester posted on his Instagram account: For all my Bears fan #yes. I’m a bear 4 life.# Beardown!!!!! Someone must have explained to him how remaining with the only NFL team that he has played for would be in his best interests from a football and financial viewpoint.
* Not sure which is more unbelievable — that the Chicago Blackhawks are 20-0-3 or that their 5-3 victory vs. the visiting Minnesota Wild was a franchise-record 10th in a row. Even the Cubs have had double-digit winning streaks.
* Speaking of the Cubs, they are partnering with Topps for an 82-card promotion available at four games this season at Wrigley Field. On May 3, there will be a 20-card giveaway featuring Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Shawon Dunston, Andre Dawson and Anthony Rizzo, among others; July 5, it will be 20 cards featuring Dave Kingman, Ryne Sandberg, Kerry Wood, Greg Maddux, Jeff Samardzija and Alfonso Soriano, among others; Aug. 2, it will be 20 cards featuring Billy Williams, Starlin Castro, Dennis Eckersley, Anthony Rizzo, Mark Grace, Glenn Beckert and Darwin Barney, among others; and on Aug. 30, it will be 22 cards featuring Lee Smith, Milt Pappas, Keith Moreland, Fergie Jenkins and Rick Sutcliffe, among others, plus a “Future Stars” card with Jorge Soler, Albert Almora and Javier Baez. Card packages will be handed out to the first 10,000 fans at each of those games. A complete checklist of the cards is available at cubs.com.Topps. Something says there will be fewer cards in the set than there will be Cubs losses in 2013.
As promised, here is more from the Arnold Sports Festival. OK, actually it is from the Rock Star Bikini Contest. Close enough. If not, then you don’t have to view the videos:
If it’s Wednesday (which it appears to be because yesterday was Tuesday — provided that you are reading this on March 6 or a subsequent Wednesday), then we are only a day away from another episode of “Sports & Torts” co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris. The highly acclaimed interview show (well, it is held in such regard in the Spada and Harris households as well as reportedly elsewhere) airs at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com.
The in-studio guest for the March 7 program is the lovely Lariyah Daniels. She is the multi-talented personality who is a model, personal trainer, singer of the group Hessler, entrepreneur and more. Lariyah will be a welcome presence on the show and will discuss competing last week in the Tropic Beauty contest in Las Vegas, her new projects and Hessler’s spring tour that will include a Chicago stop.
The latest installment of “Maximum Exposure” with another of our favorites, April Rose:
