Random thoughts while wondering whose fans are more concerned, those of the Los Angeles Lakers (0-2) or the Chicago Bulls (1-1) after losing games Monday night (and you can toss in the 0-2 Dallas Mavericks, the NBA’s defending champion, if you’d like):
* If the Bulls have trouble in back-to-back games for the season’s first two contests, imagine how well they will do later in the season when the players actually might be tired.
* A bright spot in the Bulls loss to the Golden State Warriors on Monday was the three-point shooting of C.J. Watson and Kyle Korver. Although if that’s the bright spot, it usually means you’re trying to rally from a double-digit deficit — and that is anything but a bright spot.
* The NFL announced Monday the Chicago Bears-Minnesota Vikings game would be played at 1 p.m. Sunday, as previously scheduled. The information was part of a flex scheduling update. Meaning no big television viewing audience for the game. Meaning the Bears and Vikings seasons will end as swiftly as humanly possible. No word on whether the league will allow a running clock to be used for the contest. Hey, it was just a thought.
* Bears running back Marion Barber may miss the season finale with a bad calf. Meaning he would miss five games for the season. Meaning — given Barber’s injury history — the only surprise is that he still is on the roster.
* The Chicago Cubs announced the signings of pitchers Manny Corpas and Andy Sonnanstine to non-guaranteed contracts. Which is a guaranteed way to really create enthusiasm — when (if?) they sign someone comparable to a guaranteed contract. At least president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer are doing a really good job of lowering expectations for a higher talent level on the 2012.
* OK, so New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees broke the NFL season passing-yardage record set by Miami’s Dan Marino in 1984. Brees has 5,087 to Dolphins QB Marino’s 5,084. Although if you want to factor in passing inflation, Marino still had a more impressive season.
If you’re looking for someone to sing the praises of the Bears or Cubs, etc., you may have to keep looking. If you’re looking for someone to sing, may the editorial staff at elliottharris.com recommend J. Silva. She is up for two Chicago Music Awards (“Pop Entertainer of The Year” and “Best New Entertainer”). The Chicago native was among the folks who attended the fund-raiser held by former Bears offensive lineman James “Big Cat” Williams in November. To cast a ballot, you can click here. Voting continues through Dec. 31.
