Snell, Mirotic Help Bulls Beat Bucks

February 24, 2015 @ No Comments

OK, it’s time. Time to stop focusing on Derrick Rose’s regular-season performances this season. Mainly because whatever he does doesn’t matter. And quite possibly because his game-to-game ups and downs could drive a sane person crazy. So if you know any sane people (couldn’t find any around here and that included looking in a mirror), please alert them.

* Speaking of Rose, he was 1-for-13 from the field and had eight points in the Chicago Bulls’ 87-71 victory vs. visiting Milwaukee on Monday night. On the bright side for Rose, he did have eight assists and only three turnovers. So that kinda constitutes a good game from the former NBA MVP. No? No.

* Still speaking of Rose, in three games since the all-star break, he is averaging 10.7 points and shooting 23.5 percent from the field. And the positive is? “I actually liked the way he played tonight, even though he didn’t shoot well,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. “I thought he was very aggressive defensively at the start of the game. I thought he got us going up the court quickly, and those are things you want to see.”

* Eyewitnesses at the game report it was one of the worst games — if not the worst — of the season. Thankfully, some of us were not at the United Center, so the low quality of the performance by both teams was diminished. Whew!

* The field-goal shooting by the Bucks (33.7 percent) and Bulls (35.5) was more befitting the Milwaukee Hawks and Chicago Stags. And if you are unfamiliar with those teams, look them up.

* Speaking of field-goal shooting, Tony Snell came off the bench to make 7-of-11 attempts (4-of-6 three-pointers) in scoring a game-high 20 points in 31 minutes. In his last five games he is shooting 28-for-40 (70 percent). Pretty sure that’s considered at least moderately good by Thibodeau.

* Speaking of points, Nikola Mirotic came off the bench to post 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in 31 minutes. Pretty sure that’s considered at least moderately good by Thibodeau.

* Speaking of Snell and Mirotic, they had heavier-than-usual minutes presumably because Kirk Hinrich and Taj Gibson missed the game because of illness. And Mike Dunleavy was 1-for-3 from the field.

* “Tony is playing well,” Thibodeau said. “As long as he is playing well, he is going to keep playing. You don’t have to worry about Tony being in the rotation.” Well, not maybe until the postseason.

* Something says the key to any Bulls postseason success rests in part with Rose resembling a top-flight NBA talent. A greater part rests with Thibodeau giving Snell and Mirotic meaningful minutes. Not sure which is a greater challenge.
