Hail to the Chief. Not to be confused with the Kansas City Chiefs. President Barack Obama will be watching Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. Meaning the Republicans should be coming out any minute now to say they won’t be watching — because they are opposed to everything Obama does.
“I don’t know who he favors in this particular matchup,” press secretary Jay Carney said Friday (Feb. 1). “Absent his beloved Chicago Bears, he probably just has an interest in a close and good football game.”
As has become tradition, Obama will be part of a pregame interview. CBS’s Scott Pelley will ask questions of the president at 3:30 p.m. Central time.
* Speaking of the Bears and the Super Bowl, former Bears defensive end and Super Bowl XX Most Valuable Player Richard Dent will be honoted at Super Bowl XLVII. He will take part in the Vince Lombardi Trophy ceremony after the game by carrying it to the stage and handing it over to commissioner Roger Goodell. Which is about as close as any Bears are going to come to the Lombardi Trophy for a while.
* Speaking of former Bears and the Super Bowl, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh was asked at a press conference on how playing quarterback for Mike Ditka helped him become what he is today): “Those were formidable years for me and signature years to be in Chicago. To be drafted in the NFL, and play for the legendary Mike Ditka, doesn’t get any better than that. I spent seven years – a lot of great years and a lot of great games. A lot of high highs and a lot of low lows. Doesn’t get any better than this kind of feeling. In some places, big disappointments. There were a couple that were top five in my life, but that’s football and that’s life. I look back on that, and what do they mean to me with shaping the rest of my life with the Chicago Bear organization and the people I met there and what the organization and Coach Ditka did for me? I don’t think there is a percentage to put on it. Those were signature years for me.”
And a reminder that the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue should be coming soon. It is slated to be out the week of Feb. 11. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. OK, maybe not the perfect gift for a guy to give a girl — unless, perhaps, she happens to be in it.
Which, if you’re Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, you might be able to get away with. His girlfriend Katherine Webb, Miss Alabama USA 2012, is reported to be in the issue.
For those who consider a mention of all this as merely serving as an excuse to run a photo of Webb, a friendly reminder: As the sole proprietor of this establishment, yours truly gets to make the calls in this — and just about any — regard.
