Now that the NFL apparently has gone with its youth movement for Super Bowl halftime entertainment — well, Madonna is younger than Paul McCartney — the first thought is: Guess the league had trouble finding Judy Collins, Carole King and/or Carly Simon (favorites from decades past).
SB Nation reported Monday the pop star will be the SB XLVI halftime show on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis. The NFL declined comment. Madonna reportedly was to have performed at Super Bowl XXXIII but plans never were finalized and then in Super Bowl XXV but again agreement never came.
The last 10 Super Bowl halftime performers:
2002: U2
2003: Shania Twain, No Doubt, Sting
2004: Janet Jackson (complete with wardrobe malfunction), Justin Timberlake
2005: Paul McCartney
2006: The Rolling Stones
2007: Prince
2008: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
2009: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
2010: The Who
2011: The Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash
For those hoping to see a more contemporary act — you know, like Madonna the Next Generation (aka Lady Gaga), her time will come. If the NFL halftime guidelines remain consistent, Lady Gaga should be performing at haltime in about 25-30 years. Provided that Up With People doesn’t make a comeback.
Speaking of things NFL, here is Jaime Edmondson with her pick for Monday night’s game featuring Tampa Bay and Indianapolis. She went 11-4 Sunday.
