That 80s show: As in Cubs, White Sox victory totals

February 18, 2015 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: The fine folks at Bovada, (www.Bovada.lv, Twitter: @BovadaLV) have projected victory totals for the 2015 baseball season. The Cubs are fifth and the White Sox sixth. Oh, wait. That’s the alphabetical list.

In ranking most victories to fewest, the Cubs are 13th (behind National League Central rivals St. Louis and Pittsburgh) and the Sox 15th (behind American League Central rivals Detroit and Cleveland). The statistical-analysis department around here is pretty sure that means neither Chicago team will reach the postseason. Then again, the numbers will not be totally accurate. Meaning the Cubs and Sox still have a mathematical chance — especially because the season hasn’t begun. And those numbers are used to induce folks to bet. No doubt some Cubs fans — being the optimists they are — will bet on the Cubs to win more than projected. And some Sox fans — being the pessimists they are — will bet on the Sox to fall short of winning their projected victory total. And possibly even vice versa.

* With the start of spring training mere hours away (even fewer than when your humble correspondent typed today’s effort), some of us — OK, I — can’t wonder why one year they don’t have players other than pitchers and catchers early. Say, third basemen and right fielders. Just for the hell of it. It’s thoughts such as this one that tend to indicate some of us — OK, namely me — need to have more sleep. Then again, even with more sleep, some of us — OK, me again — still would have trouble producing a coherent thought.

Pretty sure today is Wednesday (based on reasoning that yesterday was Tuesday — provided that you are readaing this on Feb. 18, 2015, or a subsequent Wednesday). Meaning that another installment of “Sports & Torts” co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris is only a day away. The highly acclaimed interview show (well, it certainly is held in such esteem in the Spada and Harris households as well as reportedly elsewhere), which airs at noon Central time on Talkzone.com features former Baylor University and Cleveland Browns standout lineman Jim Ray Smith. Smith ended his career with the Dallas Cowboys. Meaning he played for legendary coaches Paul Brown and Tom Landry. Not to mention he was among the offensive linemen who blocked for Browns running back Jim Brown, whom many consider the best in NFL history. Podcast for the program will be available later Thursday (and presumably forever, if not longer).
