That Motown Sound by Bulls vs. Pistons Was a Thud

February 21, 2015 @ No Comments

Championship NBA teams travel to Detroit and defeat the Pistons. The Chicago Bulls traveled to Detroit and lost. Draw whatever conclusions you want from that. Even those of us with limited drawing (or conclusion-drawing) skills know that’s not a pretty picture.

* Speaking of the Bulls’ 101-90 loss Friday night, it’s never a good sign when your supposed star (in this case Derrick Rose) has more turnovers (6) than he does have field goals (2-of-9, including 0-of-3 three-pointers). An uneducated guess (the only variety that you ever will find around here) is that he spent his all-star break working more on his post-career plans than on his game.

* Rose, who missed Wednesday’s practice — the team’s first after the all-star break — because of “travel issues” — said he apologized to the team Thursday. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau on scrutiny of Rose: “You’re going to open yourself up to criticism when stuff like that happens. We handled that stuff internally. Obviously, we want a commitment made by everybody to the team. Anytime there’s a break like that, you’re mindful of the circumstances, and you know you’ve got to give yourself plenty of time so that if something does go awry, you can still get back in time. It didn’t happen. Hopefully, he learned from it, and we can all learn from it. But the point is you can’t put yourself in that position. So we’ll deal with it, we dealt with it; move forward.”

* More Thibodeau to media in Motown: “He’s got a lot going on. He’s working through things. I thought right prior to the break he was playing his best basketball of the year and hopefully he’ll get back to that right away. Sometimes things do happen, and you got to deal with it as best you can.”

* Speaking of criticism of Rose, the former NBA MVP said he did not understand some folks being upset he missed practice: “Not at all. We’re over .500, we got another game [Saturday], so we got to put this performance behind [us].” Well, now those folks can be upset about that comment, too.

* The loss to the Pistons marked the end of Bulls forward Pau Gasol’s double-double streak at 14, one game short of Michael Jordan’s franchise record posted in 1989. And the Bulls didn’t win an NBA championship that season either.

* Speaking of being disappointed (even though perhaps a bit off topic), some of us will be extremely disappointed if “Saturday Night Live” fails to do a spoof of SNL’s 40th anniversary show. OK, we now return to our regularly (perhaps possibly irregularly) scheduled programming — or whatever this creative effort typing and gathering of photos and videos might be.

* On the bright side for the Bulls, all-star Jimmy Butler played like one with 30 points, five rebounds and five assists. And the Bulls do play Saturday night at home against Phoenix, so there’s the chance to make folks forget Friday’s effort (or lack thereof).
