Thursday thoughts: Jim Hendry, Jo Garcia & More

February 2, 2012 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts: Former Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry lands a job with the New York Yankees as a special assistant to general manager Brian Cashman. Cubs fans — and White Sox fans, too, come to think of it — can only hope Hendry can do for the Yanks what he did for the Cubs. Namely, to have under-performing players sign bloated contracts for too many years.

Playboy's Gamer Next Door, Jo Garcia.

* Some people stayed home and watched the Chicago Bulls play the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night. Some people went out and watched them in an establishment with a television. Some of the more fortunate went out and did not watch; instead they had other activities to occupy thenselves. Such was the case for those of us who opted for spending some quality time with Playboy’s Gamer Next Door Jo Garcia during her visit to Chicago for a promotional event for PS Vita video-game system at the PlayStation Vita Hill Social Club, 1444 N. Milwaukee. The Bulls without injured Luol Deng and Richard “Rip” Hamilton are far from a postseason power — unless it happens to be the team that they’re playing.

* Speaking of the delightful Jo Garcia, she is among the scheduled guests for Thursday’s “Sports & Torts” with David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com. The program also will be available on podcast. Hey, if a person cannot provide shameless self-promotion when the opportunity arises, who is going to? [editor’s note: As it turns out, Jo was unable to be on the show; we shall work to rectify that and try to have her on another time].

Jo Garcia gives a party-goer some helpful hints.

* Tuesday was national signing day for colleges. Which school had the best signing day? Wait two or three or four years, and you might have a clearer idea. At the rate things are going, it won’t be long before ESPN is showing games featuring middle-school kids.

* Weather in the 60s on the first day of February in Chicago means the temperature on opening day for the Cubs and/or White Sox will be approximately half that.

* There are few things better during the week of hype for the Super Bowl than reading a sports column with a mention of the game. Which means today’s effort would have been one of those if it hadn’t been for these last two sentences. So close.
