New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his right knee Thursday (May 3) while he was shagging fly balls during batting practice before a game against the host Kansas City Royals. Thereby supplanting Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls as the most iconic athlete to suffer a torn ACL in the last week.
* If the injury ends the career of Rivera, 42, he still is a first-ballot hall of famer in that he is the pre-emninent closer in baseball history.

* As far as adding insult to injury, some folks are speculating (wishing perhaps???) that the Chicago Cubs could deal closer Carlos Marmol to the Yankees — provided the Cubs pick up most of the salary due the faltering pitcher who struggled mightily in a 4-3 loss in 10 innings Thursday at Cincinnati. Marmol has blown three of five save opportunities and has walked 12 in 8 2/3 innings. And why exactly would the Yankees want someone like that? Only if Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer and/or Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein might have incriminating photos/videos/something of Yanks GM Brian Cashman.
* News flash: Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau wants to know why Yankees manager Joe Girardi still had Rivera on the warning track so the right-hander could suffer the injury. OK, not really.
* Maybe Cubs starter Ryan Dempster, who has an 0.95 earned-run average this season and tossed eight shutout innings Thursday and allowed only three hits, ought to give up a bunch of runs to see if that might change his luck in posting a victory.

As promised, former Indiana Pacers star Mel Daniels, who will be going into the basketball hall of fame this year, and Playboy Playmate for May Nikki Leigh were on Thursday’s edition of “Sports & Torts” with David Spada and Elliott Harris. Because of a logistical problem, former big-league standout and fomer National League commissioner Bill White was not on the show. We hope to reschedule him for another week.
