Sunday smorgasbord: Chicago Cubs star-of-the-future Kris Bryant hit two more home runs Saturday, thereby giving him six for the exhibition season. If he continues at this pace, he is a cinch to capture Rookie of the Year honors — for the Cactus League, if nowhere else.
* Speaking of Bryant, the Las Vegas product drove in all his teams runs in a 3-1 victory vs. the Oakland Athletics in Las Vegas and is the spring-training leader in homers. He is batting .450 (9-for-20) and seems well on his way to being the most highly touted prospect to start the season in the minor leagues. Not for a lack of talent, but for the Cubs’ desire to maintain contract control over him for an additional year rather than have him start the season in the majors. It’s all business, folks. In case that surprises anyone (and it shouldn’t).
* Speaking of the Cubs, in a split-squad game in Arizona, Edwin Jackson allowed one hit in three scoreless innings in a 10-5 victory against the Milwaukee Brewers. Thereby giving hope he will be able to be an effective starter. Yes, in the regular season.
* Speaking of home runs, Adam LaRoche hit a grand slam and added a sacrifice fly to drive in dive runs for the White Sox in their 7-6 victory vs. the Los Angeles Angels. Melky Cabrera went 3-for-3. If those two offseason acquisitions can approach that level of performance during the regular season, having pitchers who allow six runs a game might not be a big problem.
* The Bulls play a road game against Oklahoma City that is to begin at noon Central time on ABC television. Meaning some of us who haven’t even gone to sleep by 4 a.m. (and, yes, that would include yours truly who just might have dozed off momentarily in an attempt to be the creative force behind type today’s effort on this site) might sleep in Sunday. Hopefully, not too too late, although Thunder guard Russell Westbrook might have a double-double by the time some of us tune in.
* Speaking of basketball, Notre Dame captured the Atlantic Coast Conference title by defeating North Carolina on Saturday night after having downed Duke on Friday. Some of us still are trying to figure out what part of Indiana (Notre Dame being located in the South Bend area) is within 100 miles of any Atlantic coast.
* Speaking of the Irish basketball team, wondering how many folks who rooted for them against Duke and Carolina would ever root for the Notre Dame football team. And the uneducated guess here (the only variety you ever will find in this space) there are those who might even abandon the Irish in the NCAA tournament. depending on their first-round matchup.
