Win some, lose some. In the case of the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, it’s more lose some than win some. Nit-picking. Monday it was the Cubs losing at home 5-0 to Milwaukee, thanks to a five-run ninth inning. And it was the Sox losing 3-2 at Cleveland on a Jason Giambi walkoff home run. On the bright (?) side, Sox general manager Rick Hahn did trade injured reliever Jesse Crain to the Tampa Bay Rays. Compensation depends on Crain’s health. So an unfit Crain could bring the Sox little in return. And a healthy Crain would have been of little value to a team as bad as the Sox. Swell.
* Jeff Samardzija’s seven shutout innings were impressive for the Cubs. The question is whether he pitched impressively enough to entice a team to deal for him, although he says he wants to remain a Cub. Which might be enough to have other teams wonder about his health (mental).
* About the only winning the Cubs and Sox might do this season is in the world of trading players. And, of course, the teams — and their fans — won’t know for at least a few years whether any of the deals already done (and the ones yet to occur the rest of this season) benefit the Cubs and/or Sox or their trading partners.
* The only reason to have any coverage of Chicago Bears training camp is for personnel moves or injuries. Everything else is merely publicity — something the NFL does so well. After all, at this point, every NFL team is a Super Bowl contender.
* OK, so a mention of the Bears does serve as some inspiration. Photographer friend Don Bersano sent along a picture of Alexxa Condon in a Bears jersey, so that certainly merits coverage (or uncoverage, as the case may be).
* Speaking of the Bears, they did have news from training camp. From coach Marc Trestman on losing defensive end Turk McBride for the season with a ruptured Achilles: “We’re real sad. That’s a tough one.” Gee, a few days into camp and Trestman already sounds like a veteran NFL coach.
