Imagine how thrilled Chicago Blackhawks fans who recorded the replay of the Hawks victory parade Friday (June 28) on Comcast SportsNet must be to wake up Saturday and find out they taped part of the second game of the Cleveland Indians-Chicago White Sox doubleheader.
* Imagine how thrilled Sox fans who recorded the end of the second game of the doubleheader must be to wake up and find out they taped a four-run, ninth-inning Indians rally that resulted in a 9-8 Sox loss.
* Imagine the babysitting bill if you went to the Sox doubleheader and were there for the entire time (which included a 19-10 loss in the opener) — the time being 7:53, the longest single-admission doubleheader in big-league history.
* Can’t imagine many folks with babysitters lasted the entire doubleheader. In fact, viewing the late-night show from the comfort of elliottharris.com corporate headquarters (which some folks think resembles a couch located in an undisclosed location), it appeared that insects at U.S. Cellular Field outnumbered fans in the stands toward the end of the second game, if not sooner.
* On the bright side for Sox and Blackhawks fans (everything is relative, folks), the game didn’t go extra innings, so that meant the scheduled 11 p.m. replay of the Hawks victory parade began at 1:10 a.m.
* Speaking of extra innings, the Cubs lost to the Mariners in Seattle 5-4 in 10 innings on a bases-loaded single by Mike Zunino, a relative newcomer to the big leagues who isn’t even a household name in his own household. Speaking of holding, the Cubs failed to hold a lead for Travis Wood. On the bright side for the Cubs, at least they didn’t walk in the winning run on a 3-2 pitch. Speaking of walks, Cubs batters had none in the game.
* Also on the bright side for the Cubs (and, once again let us remind you that everything is relative), they have hit home runs in a season-high eight consecutive contests.
* Imagine the Pitsburgh Pirates alone in first place in the National League Central. Well, you don’t have to imagine that because it is reality. The Pirates are 49-30. After considerable calculating, that means they are 19 games over .500. Meaning they could go 32-51 in their 83 remaining games and still finish at .500. That means they would have to be about as bad as the Cubs have been at this point in the season (33-45).
* At last glance (a little after 3 a.m.), ESPN.com (a part of the cable behemoth that does not carry NHL games) did not have a mention of the Hawks celebration on its main page (then again, neither did SI.com, although that site did have a headline about a thank-you note the Hawks sent Boston). ESPN.com did have a headline on the Miami Heat exercising guard Ray Allen’s option for next season. Hawks fans may feel free to be outraged. After all, that is so much easier than dealing with the reality that the NHL tends to be extremely provincial beyond the provinces in Canada. OK, so don’t imagine the NHL being bigger than the NBA anywhere than perhaps in the comfort of your own home, your Blackhawks bar or your own mind. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the Hawks celebration, the Stanley Cup crown, etc. The only person who can take away that joy? You.
Here is where we go for our daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the never-ending efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com and their broad definition of “gratuitous” and thanks to the fine folks at Sports Illustrated who are counting down their top 50 models of all time; today we have four more with plenty still in store):
And, yes, we do have video without Sports Illustrated swimsuit models:
