White Sox Decision-Making a Problem

August 1, 2013 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts: The Chicago White Sox blew a two-run lead in the ninth inning before losing 6-5 in 10 innings Wednesday to the Indians in Cleveland. On the bright (OK, it’s not bright, although all things are relative) side for the Sox, starter Jose Quintana recorded a major league-leading number: 14 non-decisions. Which, given the Sox’ 40-65 record, probably is a good thing.

Val Keil is Playboy’s August 2013 Playmate. And a “Sports & Torts” guest, too.

* Anyone thinking the Sox are a bit impatient at the plate might be on to something. The Indians saw 53 more pitches than the Sox. Shortsop Alexei Ramirez, who went 2-for-5, faced nine pitches. Catcher Josh Phegley, who went 1-for-3, faced five. Pinch hitter Jeff Keppinger, who pinch-hit for Phegley and delivered a two-run single in the ninth, faced six.

* The Cubs, who posted a 6-1 victory vs. the visiting Milwaukee Brewers, finished July with a 14-13 record. It was their first winning month since July, 2012, when they went 15-10. So Cubs fans apparently can change that “wait till next year” mantra to “wait till next July.”

* With the July 31 trade deadline passing without the Cubs and Sox not making any more deals, it’s difficult to tell who is more disapponted: the fans or the untraded players? Unless, of course, the players like to be part of a losing ballclub.

* The good news from the NFL about the Pro Bowl is that there will be several changes (including eliminaing the AFC vs. NFC format). The bad news from the NFL about the Pro Bowl is that the game still will exist.

* Speaking of the Pro Bowl, with the game being presented by McDonald’s it will be a major upset if the two starting quarterbacks are anyone other than the Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese.

If today is Thursday (which certainly seems likely because yesterday was Wednesday — provided that today is Aug. 1, 2013 or a subsequent day after a Wednesday), then it is time for another episode of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Central time on Talkzone.com.

The guests on the Aug. 1 show are Playboy Playmate for August 2013 Val Keil and Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Warfield, who was a standout receiver with the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins.

For those unable to tune in for the noon program, it will become available later in the day on podcast at Talkzone.com. For those who expected to see a photo of someone other than Val, sorry. OK, not really sorry. But if you had that expectation, you probably haven’t been paying close attention to what goes on around here.

Here is where we go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the endless efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com and their delightful definition of “gratuitous”). Among those featured today are April Rose (always a favorite around here) and Playboy Cybergirl of the Year Jennifer Vaughn:
