White Sox Fail to Bail Out Sale vs. Rangers

August 7, 2014 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts (or what we like to think around here as such): The Chicago White Sox might want to consider obtaining second baseman Adam Rosales. If for no reason other than so he won’t bat against Chris Sale. Two Rosales home runs accounted for all the Texas Rangers’ scoring in a 3-1 victory vs. Sale and the Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

* Speaking of Rosales (who went 2-for-4 in raising his batting average to .324), he entered the game with one home run in 30 at-bats this season. In his career, he is a .222 hitter. Against Sale, he is 6-for-11 with three home runs in his career.

* Speaking of home runs, Chicago Cubs staff ace (OK, by default perhaps) Jake Arrieta allowed one against the host Colorado Rockies. Which wouldn’t have been so bad if it hadn’t been for the other hits and runs he gave up (13 hits and nine runs overall) in 5 innings plus seven batters in the sixth inning of a 13-4 loss.

* Speaking of hits, Cubs rookie second baseman Javier Baez went 0-for-4 in his second big-league game. On the bright (?) side, he didn’t strike out. Welcome to Cubdom, where some fans don’t look at the glass as half empty but half full — even when the glass is empty.

* Speaking of Baez, the Cubs are 1-1 with him on the team. If the Cubs can continue at that clip, they would finish with a 73-89 record. Which would be quite an accomplishment. If the Cubs continue are their current winning percentage of .429, their record would be 69-93.

* If it’s Thursday (and the chances for that seem almnost overwhelming because yesterday was Wednesday — provided that today is Aug. 7, 2014, or a subsequent Thursday), then it is time for another edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Central time on Talkzone.com. This week’s guests are Hall of Fame tight end Jackie Smith (who long ago toiled for the St. Louis Cardinals a few decades ago when he and your humble correspondent were a several years younger), fellow former Cardinals receiver Bobby Joe Conrad and former Buffalo Bulls quarterback Jim Kelly.
