There might not have been a particularly large crowd (18,630) or a particularly happy one at the Chicago White Sox-Tampa Bay Rays game Thursday (Sept. 27) at U.S. Cellular Field. Particularly because the Rays prevailed 3-2 to drop the Sox two games behind. The difference was Evan Longoria’s ninth-inning home run. The happiest person at the game not wearing a Rays uniform? An educated guess would say Jaime Edmondson, the Playboy Playmate who is a favorite around here (as well as elsewhere). She is Longoria’s significant other. And that relationship is significant because it validates running her photo (as if any reason really is necessary).
* Speaking of Jaime, she started off Week 4 of her NFL picks well with her choice of the Baltimore Ravens over the Cleveland Browns. The game marked the return of the non-replacement game officials. Which means the regular officials, assuming “regular” is an adjective that applies to those guys. To show how much fans missed the real version, they cheered the zebras. And somewhere in hell, they are assessing the situation now that that location has frozen over.
* Back to baseball (because it appears in Chicago it might not be around after six more games), if the Tigers go 3-3 in their remaining regular-season games, the Sox need to go 5-1 to tie for the division title. If it’s any consolation to Sox fans (and the guess here is they need any and all the consoling that can be found), the Tigers close out the season on the road. Sadly for the Sox, Detroit plays three games at Minnesota (Detroit leads the season series 8-7, including 5-1 at Target Field) and three at Kansas City (the Tigers lead the series 11-4).
* The Chicago Cubs, who lost their fifth in a row with a 7-5 decision against the Rockies in Denver, have a 59-97 record. Meaning they have to go 4-2 to avoid losing 100 games this season. If it’s any consolation to Cubs fans (and the guess here is that by now most of those types are waiting till next season — or next decade — at this point, so it’s not), the Cubs do close out the season with three home games against Houston, which boasts (OK, maybe not boasts but certainly has) the worst record in baseball.
* So the question now is which team is more likely: the Sox in the postseason or the Cubs in double — not triple — digits in losses?
* Nothing says golf quite like a group of professional golfers in coats and ties. Unless it’s broadcasters in coats and ties. If the Ryder Cup is to be taken so seriously (by some — not necessarily the editorial staff at elliottharris.com) as a competition for global golf supremacy with such formality, then the golfers should have to battle in coats, ties and slacks. They can wear golf shoes but only if they are brown wingtips (for those familiar with shoe terminology).
* More than one person has observed that Sox starter Jake Peavy pitched a great game. Admittedly, he kept his team in the game. But a great game would have been allowing 0 runs, wouldn’t it?
Good luck to all the participants at the Olympia contest this weekend in Las Vegas. Well, as long as we are talking about bikini competitors and the like (and even if we were not) …
Another episode of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris is in the vaults. Or wherever the folks at talkzone.com put their podcasts of the highly acclaimed show (well, it’s highly acclaimed in the Spada and Harris households for sure and even elsewhere possibly).
Featured on the Sept. 27 interview show are bikini competitor Lisa Eveleth, who has had to deal with Lupus; and former football star Mike Haynes, who is working to raise prostate cancer awareness.
Both provided interesting perspective on both their athletic activities and on the illnesses they discuss. Both have dealt with health issues and are definitely worth spending some time with.
There is no question that Lisa and Mike were great guests. To view the interviews, you can click here.
