So the Baltimore Orioles were concerned that the Baltimore Ravens would be playing the Denver Broncos to open the NFL season Thursday night (Sept. 5) with both contests to be played in Baltimore. Consequently, the football game was moved to Denver. And attendance at the Orioles-Chicago White Sox contest was 17,383 (37.8 percent of capacity). On the bright side — at least for Orioles fans — the Orioles defeated the Sox 3-1. And the Ravens were trounced 49-27.
* Speaking of the Sox, they have lost seven in a row. They have an American League-worst road record of 24-49. On the bright (?) side, they have only eight more road games remaining.
* Speaking of road games, the Ravens yielded a franchise-worst point total, thanks in no small part to Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who passed for seven touchdowns to tie an NFL single-game record shared by five others, including Sid Luckman of the Bears. Manning (27-of-42 for 462 yards) had a QB rating of 141.1 — which is about the cumulative total for most Bears quarterbacks of recent vintage.
* Speaking of Broncos quarterbacks (or in this case, a former Broncos quarterback), Tim Tebow — a man without a team — says he will hold onto his NFL dream. But only if he can be a QB. He reportedly is unwilling to change position and not interested in the Canadian Football League. Unless the NFL shifts a franchise to Gainesville, Fla., it would seem Tebow can say goodbye to his dream.
* Speaking of football fantasies, Playboy Playmate and fantasy football savant Pilar Lastra was on the Sept. 5 “Sports & Torts” show with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris on Talkzone.com. Also on the show was Pro Football Hall of Fame center Jim Langer, who played for the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings. To access the program, you can click here.
* Former Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said players on the team when he played faked injuries to slow down opposing offenses that operated fast-paced attacks. Then he said he didn’t realize there is any sort of code of conduct that would have players — or former players — from making statements like that. In case anyone was wondering whether Urlacher resented not playing any longer and/or has any animosity toward his former employer, the aforementioned would seem to answer that question in the affirmative.
