Thursday thoughts (or as close to what passes for thinking around here): Gavin Floyd pitched a 1-2-3 first inning in Toronto on Wednesday (Aug. 15). Which may not sound like much of an accomplishment — except the Chicago White Sox right-hander had not done so since June 14 in St. Louis. With the Sox winning 9-5 thanks to a five-run seventh inning, he posted his first victory since July 23. Something says Floyd (9-9) might have to be more than a .500 pitcher for the Sox to capture the American League Central.
* Adam Dunn hit his 399th home run in the Sox’ victory. Remember when hitting 500 homers guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame and 400-plus gave you a reasonable shot at Cooperstown? OK, maybe not if you’re younger than, say, 25.
* The Chicago Cubs made some front-office moves Wednesday and plan to make more. Included in the group being excluded were vice president of player personnel Oneri Fleita (who received a four-year contract extension last September before Theo Epstein was named president of baseball operations and Jed Hoyer was named general manager) and manager of baseball information Chuck Wasserstrom, who started out in media relations with the team in 1986. Manager of statistical analysis Ari Kaplan is to become a consultant for chairman Tom Ricketts. And, yes, at some point the team will make changes on the field. Well, if attendance drops maybe.
* Speaking of Cubs changes, left fielder Alfonso Soriano — who already reportedly turned down the chance to become a member of the San Francisco Giants this season — said again after Wednesday’s victory vs. the Houston Astros he likely would not want to be traded to the Giants. Well, not unless the weather improves and the ball carries better and there isn’t so much left field to roam in San Fran. So Cubs fans hoping the team can deal Soriano this season will have to hope for another team to lose a big bat to a performance-enhancing-drug violation and subsequent penalty (as is the case with Giants left fielder Melky Cabrera).
As has been noted, the Chicago Sky resumes its WNBA season Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Allstate Arena against the Atlanta Dream. Which means Sylvia Fowles and Swin Cash will be back on the court for the Sky after being on the U.S. women’s basketball team that won Olympic gold.
At halftime of Friday’s game, the Sky will honor nine women as part of a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX: Sky chairwoman and former team president and CEO Margaret Stender, media personality Sarah Spain, Girls in the Game president and CEO Amy Skeen, Chicago Force founder Lisa Cole, former soccer star Julie Foudy, St. Francis High volleyball coach Peg Kopec, former Chicago director of Go Girl Go! Ramelia Williams, Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana CEO Maria Wynne and Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon.
Swin and Sylvia held a press conference on Tuesday to talk about their London adventure:
If this is Thursday (and the editorial staff at elliottharris.com is fairly certain it is because yesterday was Wednesday and tomorrow is Friday), then it is time for the weekly edition of “Sports & Torts” at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris.
The highly acclaimed show (well, it is in the Spada and Harris households) will feature Amber Podell, Ms. Illinois United States 2012; and former Houston Oilers defensive lineman Elvin Bethea, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
For those who are unable to tune in at noon (or for those who do and would like an encore performance), the show should be available on podcast later.
As promised, here is more video from Wizard World Chicago Comic Con 2012 that was held Aug 9-12 at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. We are more than happy to have Adrianne Curry as today’s interview subject. And if things go according to plan (which frequent readers of this space realize occasionally does occur), there will be more videos from the fun festival. And for those wondering whatever happened to the promise of more videos from Chicago Exxxotica, we still have more that will make it onto this site in the not-too-distant future.
Speaking of fun, Adrianne is always fun at these events. The following is no exception:
How about some random and/or gratuitous video? The complaint department is standing by (OK, not really, so forget it):
