If the 2012 Cubs season is half as enjoyable as “Woody’s Winter Warm-Up,” it’s going to be a lot of fun. The event Friday (which was Jan. 13 for those who might be inclined toward being superstitous) benefitted the Wood Family Foundation and was held at Harry Caray’s Tavern, Navy Pier.
Meaning newly re-signed Cubs reliever Kerry Wood and wife Sarah were the hosts for the party that included a musical performance from Plain White T’s.
Among the evening’s highlights was a chance to chat with Cubs owner Tom Ricketts. In a rare show of restraint, yours truly did not implore him to revive Wrigley Field’s ball girls. We’ll save that for another time. Let the record show, however, there would have been numerous worthy candidates in the crowd to fill the role of lovely lasses to brighten up the ballpark.
Speaking of lovely lasses, another of the evening’s highlights was meeting David DeJesus. OK, meeting his wife, Kim. If the gods (baseball and otherwise) are kind enough, there will be more of her another day. Let us pray.
Cubs players served as servers and bartenders, and everyone appeared to have a good time. And for those who wondered, yes, Ronnie “Woo Woo” Wickers was there. So were former Bears Richard Dent and Otis Wilson. Patrons mingled with Cubs manager Dale Sveum, players and team officials. All the while, a sign in the establishment reminded: 75 days till opening day.
There’s noting quite like snow on the ground and frigid temperatures to make that sign so heart-warming.
OK, let’s go to some video:
And now the musical part of today’s post (provided that YouTube allows such things):
Earlier in the day, your humble correspondent spent some quality time with good friend Brian Bernardoni wandering around the 2012 Cubs Convention. Among the familiar faces at the event was a new one: Liberty, a young woman representing Go Nuts. The company produces necklaces and bracelets from nuts. Somehow there seems a natural punch lines involving Cubs fans, but we’ll let you come up with one of your own.
