You can add another star to the galaxy of talented pro basketball players in Chicago. Someone who has been compared to LeBron James. That good. While Bulls fans can lament and/or criticize the absence of Derrick Rose this season, the Sky should be able to smile for quite a while about the addition of Elena Delle Donne, the second player chosen in the 2013 WNBA draft.
A 6-5 guard/forward from the University of Delaware, Delle Donne was second in the nation in scoring in 2012-13 after being No. 1 the previous season. She met the media on May 2 and impressed with her poise. Her next challenge is to impress Sky coach Pokey Chatman with her skills. Which shouldn’t be difficult.
Elena will show off some of her athletic ability Monday night (May 6) when she tosses out the ceremonial first pitch at the Texas Rangers-Cubs game at Wrigley Field.
She was considered the No. 1 high school recruit in 2008 and signed to play at college powerhouse Connecticut. However, after a few days on campus, she returned home and enrolled at Delaware. Oh, and she decided not to play basketball. Instead she played volleyball, another sport in which she excelled.
Elena returned to basketball the following season and lived happily ever after. Or something close to that. She comes from a close-knit family that includes her parents, a brother Gene and an older sister Lizzie, who was born deaf, blind and with cerebral palsy.
Away from home for the first time for any prolonged period. Elena is adjusting to life in Chicago and as a member of the Sky, which began preseason practice on Sunday. She should fit in nicely on a team that Elena hopes to help to the first postseason appearance in franchise history. Her size and skills should complement all-star center Sylvia Fowles, who had to deal with double-teams much of the 2012 season.
Here is video with Elena from her introductory press conference and also a brief one-on-one interview with your humble correspondent:
A touch of culture never hurt anyone. Of course, around here the closest we generally come to that is yogurt. Oh, wait. Not that type? Sorry. Some of us confuse so easily. Oh, OK. Here we have legendary lawyer Corri Fetman interviewing Joffrey Ballet dancer Fabrice Calmels in a workout video:
What better way to start the week than with some non-gratuitous video (those of us who toil in the editorial and/or video departments at elliottharris.com like to think of all this as providing a public service):
