Sunday smorgasbord: Derrick Rose’s return to NBA action was a success. So was Northwestern University’s prime-time football game against Ohio State (well, if the final score is not a consideration).
* With Rose back in the lineup for the first time since suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the 2012 playoffs, the Chicago Bulls defeated the Indiana Pacers 82-76 at Indianapolis in their first exhibition game. He had 13 points (5-of-12 field goals, no three-point attempts) and four turnovers in 20 minutes. Included among his baskets was a dunk. Rose said his vertical leap has improved from 37 inches to about 42. Maybe his ACL surgery included installing a spring or two.
* It’s not every Sunday that finds people second-guessing the play-calling of a Northwestern game. This would happen to be one of those Sundays. The way NU handled the closing minutes of the game when the Wildcats had the ball had more than a few folk scratching their heads (among quite likely other body parts). Of course, if NU had prevailed, taking time off the clock would have been sheer genius.
* For any conspiracy theorists in the audience (and you know you’re out there), funny how Ohio State scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone on the game’s last play to cover the point spread in Saturday’s 40-30 victory against Northwestern. OK, maybe not funny if you were betting the Buckeyes wouldn’t cover.
* New Orleans Saints players for Chicago Bears fans to focus on Sunday at Soldier Field would include tight end Jimmy Graham. Not only because of the damage he can do to the 2013 Bears, but because of what he might do to the legacy of Mike Ditka. OK, so nothing will diminish that, but Graham has six touchdown receptions in the Saints’ four games this season. Ditka (in 1963 with the Bears) and Antonio Gates in 2010 with the San Diego Chargers have the most TD catches by a tight end through five games. One TD catch vs. the Bears would tie Graham with those two. More than one TD catch vs. the Bears means it likely will be a long afternoon for them.
* Speaking of the Saints, quarterback Drew Brees has a chance to surpass Drew Brees. He tied himself Monday for most consecutive 300-yard games at nine. Meaning a 300-yard game against the Bears would give hin the record by himself. As opposed to with himself. As if that makes a difference — other than perhaps to the Bears and their chances if Brees does throw for that many yards against them.
