Random thoughts while contemplating the Los Angeles Dodgers are in the National League Championship Series after being in last place on July 1 (meaning the Chicago Cubs and White Sox were on a similar path — well, other than the slight difference that those two teams finished in last place):
* The Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves on Monday night (or early Tuesday in Eastern time zones) thanks to former White Sox infielder Juan Uribe, who failed to execute a sacrifice bunt and subsequently hit a two-run, eighth-inning, game-winning home run in a 4-3 decision. Which is about as close as Sox fans can come to embracing the 2013 postseason. Of course, Uribe’s heroics may take Sox fans (those with their memories intact) back to his heroics in 2005 when the Sox won the World Series.
* Say this for the Cubs and Sox: No one is second-guessing their manager the way Braves fans are Fredi Gonzalez for not using closer Craig Kimbrel in the eighth inning.
* Speaking of the postseason (and looking ahead to future seasons), the St. Louis Cardinals won Game 4 of their National League Division series 2-1 on a one-hitter at Pittsburgh. The Cards’ pitchers were starter Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal. All are 23 or younger. And the Cubs are going to produce young talent as good as — or better than — what the Cardinals have? The Cubs need to rebuild credibility more than they need to rebuild Wrigley Field.
* Speaking of St. Louis, that is where the Bulls played and won 106-87 Monday night against the Memphis Grizzlies. Derrick Rose had 13 points, three steals and one turnover in 23 minutes for the Bulls. He shot better from three-point range (1-of-1) than he did from the free-throw line (6-of-10). Some other Bulls did other things and scored more points and stuff. But, really, does any of that matter?
* Speaking of the Bulls, they take off Tuesday for Brazil to play an exhibition game Saturday against the Washington Wizards. The previous sentence serves as justification for running a Brazil-themed photo and/or videos (not that there really needs to be any rationalization to do so).
* Speaking of the Bulls and Brazil, the guess here is that center Joakim Noah (who has sat out the first two exhibition contests) will make the trip — for the scenery, if for no other reason.
