And so it begins anew. Another year in the books. Another year to provide a blank slate for dreams and delusions, illusions and confusion. Hello, 2014. How are you doing? So far, so good?
The Chicago Bulls ended the 2013 portion of their season with an unimpressive New Year’s Eve 85-79 home loss to the Toronto Raptors. If the idea was for the Bulls’ performance to drive people to drink, then the plan probably worked to perfection. Not that a fair number of fans needed much encouragement in the partying part of the evening.
But we won’t focus on one game other than to point out it is/was/always will be one game.
The past is the past, good and bad. The future is unknown. So here we are in the present, the start of a new year. And with that new beginning, people make resolutions. And some folks actually keep some of them. More power to them.
My resolution for many years has been not to make resolutions. And I’ve been pretty good with that — of any of all this makes any sense to anyone.
New years are about starting over. Which, if you really think about it, is next to impossible. You can wipe the slate clean of friends, family, current circumstances (good and bad)? Not really. But you can try to eliminate some of the baggage that might be dragging you down.
Not that the Bulls are a likely candidate for that. Well, unless they make personnel changes. The team has had its share of success and failure in its relatively recent past — the last 25 years or so. But none of that really impacts on the present, other than to serve as a reminder of good times and bad.
So a new calendar is no guarantee — or even anything approaching a probability — of change.
Individuals, of course, have a better to chance for change than do organizations. Well, provided that the people are open to change.
Change? You want change? About the only change I like is the loose type found buried in the pillows of the sofa (which occasionally functions as the home office). But even I have been known to change ever so slightly to minimize some of the annoying aspects of my personality (who knew they even existed?).
So we set goals. Grand goals with grand plans. And sometimes we achieve those goals. Sometimes we come close. Sometimes we don’t. The important thing is we try.
One of my goals is to be more productive. A noble endeavor if ever there was one. And I am confident of meeting that goal — because I am going to work on that right away. Well, as “right away” as the football bowl season’s end.
Now will someone please pass the chips and dip?
Happy bowl watching if you’re so inclined and/or reclined.
And to all, a happy 2014.
