Sunday smorgasbord: The United States defeated Russia 3-2 in a shootout in ice hockey Saturday at the Winter Olympics in Russia. Anyone comparing that game to the Americans’ 1980 hockey team triumph over Russia is either ignorant or stupid (although it could be a case of both). Global politics would be one difference. The composition of the teams (American amateurs vs. Russia’s professionals in 1980 at Lake Placid, N.Y.) would be another. Not that people can’t or shouldn’t celebrate a hockey victory. But understand exactly what it is that you’re celebrating. And your humble correspondent is certain an overwhelming majority will comprehend (OK, maybe not certain, but some of us do believe in miracles).
* Speaking of celebrating, U.S. skier Bode Miller became the oldest Alpine skier to medal (he’s 36) when he tied for the bronze Sunday in super-G. I still think the Winter Games had more events that people could relate to. Like snowball throwing, snowman building, etc. Super-G sounds like a spot few men rarely find in intimate encounters with members of the female persuasion,
* Chicago White Sox pitcher Nate Jones, who appeared to be the leading candidate for the closer role, is expected to miss a week because of a strained gluteus muscle. Meaning he has become a leading candidate to spend time on the disabled list during the season.
* The Chicago Cubs signed infielder/outfielder Emilio Bonifacio to a minor league deal. Last season with Toronto and Kansas City, Bonifacio, 28, hit .243. Hardly eye-popping. But better than incumbent second baseman Darwin Barney’s batting average in 2013. “He’s added depth,” manager Rick Renteria said of Bonifacio. As if the Cubs aren’t in deep enough to start with.
* Former Chicago Bulls guard Marco Belinelli captured the three-point shooting title Saturday night. In case Bulls fans were looking for something to lament during the all-star break.
* Plenty of people complained about the NBA’s new slam-format. Not having witnessed the event Saturday night, I shall refrain from passing judgment. Well, other than wondering why they still hold the event.
* Maybe home-court advantage for the NBA finals can go to the winning team in the slam-dunk competition. Of course, that makes no sense. Just as winning the all-star game to determine home court makes no sense. In baseball, basketball or anything.
* Congratulations to Swin Cash of the WNBA Chicago Sky for being on the winning team — Team Bosh — in another of the all-star festivities Saturday night. Elena Delle Donne of the Sky also participated (video below).
