Is Watching Snow Fall an Olympic Sport Yet?

February 18, 2014 @ No Comments

Random thoughts while beginning to realize I picked the wrong winter to become that guy who is obsessive-compulsive about shoveling to keep the driveway and sidewalk clear of snow:

2013 SI swimsuit cover girl Kate Upton is the back cover girl for 2014.

* Speaking of snow, there was none involved with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover models Nina Agdal, Lily Aldridge and Chrissy Teigen, who appeared on “The Jimmy Kimmel Show” Monday night.

* Speaking of late-night television, Jimmy Fallon’s debut as “The Tonight Show” host was not without a glitch. At least as far as my cable company was concerned. The show missed a few minutes (on the high-definition version). At least in the good, old days, we used to have a TV screen full of snow rather than a blank, black picture. Then again, most of us have had enough snow to last a while. Solid start for Fallon.

* Speaking of starts, the start of spring training has arrived with pitchers and catchers reporting. And position players not far behind. If there is anything to help some of us make it through February, it is spring training — with the accompanying hope (not to mention the sunshine and warmer weather of Florida and Arizona). Because if we can last that long, then we actually will be able to view some big-league baseball on TV. Comcast SportsNet will show live spring training contest beginning on March 14. CSN’s “15 Games in 16 Days” starts with the Chicago White Sox against the Cleveland Indians at 3 p.m. Central time. The first Chicago Cubs game will be March 16 at 3 p.m. with the opponent also the Indians. Other Sox games: Los Angeles Dodgers (March 15), Oakland (March 18), Los Angeles Angels (March 19), Cubs (March 21), San Francisco (March 22), Colorado (March 23), Seattle (March 24) and Cincinnati (March 26). Other Cubs games (other than vs. the Sox): Angels (March 17 and 25), Seattle (March 20) and Arizona (March 28 & 29).

* Given the nature of Mother Nature this winter, some of us would welcome seeing intrasquad games at this point. Or at least consecutive days with the sun shining.

* Speaking of sports on TV, when the weather at the Winter Olympics is warmer than wherever you might be, that’s less than heart-warming. Or body-warming.

* Speaking of warm bodies, the SI.com site has an abundance of swimsuit videos, photos, etc. To access it, you can go here. We will try to provide some of the content here as well.
