Bears Make Move With McClellin — to Linebacker

The Chicago Bears have called an audible on Shea McClellin, their 2012 first-round NFL draft pick. Speaking to the media in Indianapolis where the league’s talent-evaluation combine is being held, general manager Phil Emery said the former Boise State star will shift to linebacker from defensive end.

It was either a photo of Shea McClellin or model Chelsea Ryan. Decisions, decisions.

In college, McClellin played linebacker.

“I think he’s very excited,” Emery said of McClellin. “Obviously at Boise, he played Mike [middle linebacker], he played Sam [strongside linebacker], he played with his hand on the ground. So versatility is his strength. I’ll say this: Generally, we’ll take calculated risks, which we did with Shea. When we swing, we’re gonna swing on the high side of athleticism, and that’s why we’re still excited about him being able to contribute at a high level.”

And it took only two seasons of McClellin not contributing at a high level for the Bears to realize changing positions might be a way to contribute at a high level. Not exactly an endorsement of the front office/coaching staff contributing at a high level.
