Midweek musings: With a 107-103 victory over the host Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday, the Chicago Bulls improved their record to 30-26. In the Eastern Conference, that means they are good enough (or the East is bad enough) for the No. 4 seed. Well, if the season ended today. Which might not be the worst idea anyone has had in a while.
* The Bulls used eight players vs. the Hawks with seven scoring (all in double figures). It is just a guess (and an uneducated one at that), but on balance, chances are they will win most games when they have a balanced attack.
* Bulls guard D.J. Augustin (10 points) struggled from the field for the second straight game. He was 2-for-14, including 1-for-8 from three-point range. That three-pointer came on a shot from beyond halfcourt to end the first half. As hall of fame scribe Sam Smith noted on Twitter, Augustin’s problem obviously is taking shots from too close to the basket. Augustin also lead the Bulls with a plus-10 in 29 minutes of playing time.
* Speaking of playing time, Bulls forward Mike Dunleavy (22 points) played a little more than he might have imagined and did not lose his sense of humor in the process: “I appreciate [Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau] giving me that nine-second breather at the end of the half. That made a big difference.”
* If it’s Wednesday (and the chances of that being so seem pretty good in that yesterday was Tuesday — provided that today is February 26, 2014, or a subsequent Wednesday), then we are a day away from another entertaining edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Central time on Talkzone.com. This week’s guests are former Buffalo Bills receiver Andre Reed (who will be an inductee this summer to the Pro Football Hall of Fame) and former Princeton University and New York Knicks star Bill Bradley (who is in the basketball hall of fame). If I may say so, the interview with the former New Jersey senator and onetime presidential aspirant is one of the best in the history of the show. Podcast of the program will be available later in the day Thursday on the Talkzone web site.
* Comcast SportsNet kicks off (or drops the puck on) coverage for the Chicago Blackhawks-Pittsburgh Penguins “Coors Light NHL Stadium Series” game Saturday at Soldier Field with a “Blackhawks Pregame Live” show on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and “Blackhawks Postgame Live” at approximately 8:30. The shows will air from Soldier Field. After the postgame program, CSN will air “Stadium Series: Soldier Field,” a 30-minute program featuring interviews with several Hawks. The program also will be broadcast Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CSN’s coverage Saturday also will include pregame and postgame shows. NBC will televise the contest.
