LeBron Wilts in Effort to Match Wilt, MJ

March 5, 2014 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: LeBron James is no Michael Jordan. OK, so there is an argument to be made on the Miami Heat star’s behalf. But James, who had 61 points Monday and had a chance to become only player other than Wilt Chamberlain with consecutive 60-point games, scored a mere 22 Tuesday in the Heat’s 106-103 loss to the host Houston Rockets. And the Jordan connection? The former Bulls star is the only player to score 60 points on March 4 (he had 61 in 1987 at Detroit).

No Bull effort: A photo of model Cris Urena or one of Jimmer Fredette?

* Speaking of James who visits Chicago on Sunday for an afternoon game against the Bulls, he was 1-for-7 in the second half Tuesday and scoreless in the fourth quarter. He missed a last-second three-point attempt that could have forced overtime. And any Bulls fan can tell you MJ never missed a game-winning or game-tying shot at the buzzer — even if His Airness actually did (selective memory is a wonderful thing — except when it isn’t).

* Speaking of the Bulls, the Jimmer Fredette Era, Day 3 report: No game. The former BYU star, whom the Bulls plucked from waivers after Sacramento worked out a buyout with him, continues to average a point per 1.5 minutes played for his new team. Which, if the statistical computation and analysis departments at ElliottHarris.com are correct (and there is widespread belief in some parts of this organization that that is a 50-50 chance at best), means if Fredette were to play 30 minutes per game, he would score 20 points. Of course, there are certain variables that make that conclusion uncertain. But, hey, we all can dream, can’t we?

* Former Chicago Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly is rejoining the team as a special assistant to president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer. Given the current Cubs regime’s focus on the future, some skeptics in the crowd may be thinking the Cubs brass will deal Lilly by midseason for a front-office prospect to be named later.

* Time for the weekly reminder that there will be a weekly reminder tomorrow regarding the “Sports & Torts” show for March 6, 2014. The interview program with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris airs at noon Central time on Talkzone.com with podcast available later in the day Thursday at the Talkzone web site. This week’s guests are the lovely and talented April Rose (a longtime favorite who has a hockey show set to debut March 7 on Comcast SportsNet) and former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver John Stallworth, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
