Among the lessons that the first day of the NCAA basketball tournament provided was the seeding process is imperfect (in case you thought otherwise). Or if not the seeding process, then the play of some lower-seeded teams.
* The best college team in Ohio — at least for one day — was No. 11 seed Dayton, which defeated No. 6 seed Ohio State on Thursday, with No. 5 seed Cincinnati losing to No. 12 seed Harvard later in the day.
* Four overtime games, plus a few others where favored teams barely survived, made for an interesting — and long — day and night of college basketball. Hope it didn’t take too much study time away from the “student-athletes.”
* Another lesson from Thursday’s tourney: If the games are going to last past midnight, some of us might want to make certain we have a sufficient supply of chips and dip. Also there is something to be said for not having to be up first thing in the morning.
* Something says folks who selected Harvard and fellow No. 12 seed North Dakota State both winning (the latter against Oklahoma) are more numerous on the planet than unicorns but not by a whole lot.
* Another lesson from Thursday’s tourney: There is a definite need to do hand-flexibility exercises to avoid cramping while operating the remote.
* Remember when it was a big deal to be able to view all the tournament games on your computer?
* Remember when it was a big deal to be able to watch two tournament games at the same time on television (even if you did have to switch channels)?
** The biggest challenge regarding Thursday’s games? Not No. 4 Louisville surviving No. 13 Manhattan or any other captivating contests. It was finding TruTV on the channel lineup.
