Bears’ Marshall Enjoys Viewing New Deal

Random thoughts (with a generous definition of “thoughts”) while wondering how many NFL players are around to play out their contracts — you know, the big-dollar ones intended to impress the masses but are not guaranteed:

* Some of us like to sleep late (in no small part because some of us like to stay up late), so by the time your humble correspondent was awake Monday morning, there were all sorts of news flashes about Brandon Marshall. The Chicago Bears wide receiver had signed a three-year contract on national televison on “The View.” Of course, the initial reaction at ElliottHarris.com headquarters was ever insightful: So this is the replacement for Barbara Walters? Uh, no. That was a three-year contract extension with the Bears. Oh.

* Of all the headlines that came from Marshall’s signing, my favorite came from the fine folks at The Heckler and their “Brandon Marshall Contracts Measles From Jenny McCarthy After Appearing on “The View.” That would be Jenny McCarthy, who has expressed anti-vaccination views and then denied any such thing. * Speaking of the worlds of entertainment and the NFL, actress Kate Mara (of the New York Giants Maras — as well as of the Pittsburgh Steelers Rooneys) is featured in the May issue of Playboy. Not in a pictorial but in the magazine’s 20Q. As in 20 questions. A link to the questions and answers is available here.

* The Chicago White Sox reported slugger Jose Abreu had an MRI on the injured ankle that has landed the rookie on the disabled list and there was no structural damage. The same results could be said for the Sox offense Monday in Kansas City with Paul Konerko replacing Abreu in the lineup. Konerko hit a two-run, fifth-inning home run that rallied the Sox to a 7-6 victory vs. the Royals.

* Alexei Ramirez hit his sixth home run and drove in four runs for the Sox. His six homers and 32 runs batted in lead American League shortstops. In case you were wondering whether Abreu would be the only White Sox player on the AL All-Star Game roster this year.
