Bulls Need Rose to Play, Not Recruit

Random thoughts (well, we think that’s what they are but not entirely certain) while wondering if the public transportation to Soldier Field for the World Cup viewing party Tuesday will include row boats:

* Speaking of weather elements, some of us are glad to have mowed the lawn Monday before the storms hit — even if doing so means the grass will now grow back even more quickly.

* Speaking of elements, there seems to be an element of Chicago Bulls fans disappointed that guard Derrick Rose is not recruiting free-agent forward Carmelo Anthony. Really? The best recruiting argument Rose could have made would for him to have been healthy enough to play last season.

* OK, so let’s pretend Rose does try to recruit Anthony, who decides against joining the Bulls. Then it’s Rose’s fault, right? Even if Anthony never intended to sign with the Bulls.

* Still speaking of recruiting Anthony, does the lure of watching the White Sox from a suite impress? Well, it beats sitting in the rain, if nothing else, doesn’t it?

* Still speaking of recruiting Anthony, does anyone really think the deciding factor in his decision to leave the New York Knicks or go elsewhere is another player courting him?

* Speaking of players going else, now that Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta appears to have overtaken Jeff Samardzija as the team’s No. 1 starter (thanks in no small part to Arrieta taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning of Monday’s 2-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park), does Samardzija’s trade value diminish to the point that the Cubs keep him for the rest of the season and end up with an additional first-round draft pick next season after he signs elsewhere?

* Speaking of elsewhere, Manny Ramirez went 3-for-4 in his home debut (meaning Des Moines) for the Iowa Cubs. He hit a two-run home run. Not to be outdone, third baseman Kris Bryant went 2-for-4 with an eighth-inning grand slam. Iowa beat Omaha 7-6 in 10 innings after the Cubs blew a save in the ninth. When did the Omaha Royals become the Omaha Storm Chasers? And why?

* Speaking of the Red Sox (well, we were a couple of paragraphs ago), Boston starter Jake Peavy fell to 1-7; his former White Sox batterymate A.J. Pierzyinski had a pinch-hit single in the ninth off Hector Rondon after Stephen Drew broke up Arrieta’s no-hitter with two out in the eighth. On the bright (?) side for the Sox — White Sox — there were no reports of drowning in the U.S. Cellular Field parking lots after their Monday game was rained out.
