Sunday smorgasbord: In case there was any confusion, I am not a doctor. Nor do I play one on TV, in cyberspace or anywhere else. That said (or typed in this case), I’m fairly certain sprained ankles do not heal by playing basketball. So anyone concerned that Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls are being too cautious about his welfare needs to give it a rest.
* Speaking of Rose (who sat out Saturday night’s home game against the Boston Celtics), the idea is to have him playing as closely to peak performance as possible — for the postseason. The Bulls appear good enough to reach the playoffs, even if Rose’s recovery is prolonged. A reminder that the NBA’s regular season is nothing more than a prelude to the playoffs (the season that really matters).
* Speaking of the Bulls, they appeared to come out flat early, rallied late and lost eventually 106-101. Bulls reserve guard Aaron Brooks led all scorers with 26 points in 28 minutes. He was 9-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-7 three-pointers. Starting guard Kirk Hinrich was 0-for-7 in 28 minutes. Not sure whether the minutes will change, but the possibility of Brooks starting might — as long as Rose is sidelined.
* The Bulls were outrebounded for the sixth consecutive contest. “In order to do something special, you have to be a great rebounding team,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. Or maybe play better defense than the one the Bulls had vs. the Celtics that allowed easy baskets and open shots and resulted in Boston shooting 42-of-81 from the field. With the statistical-analysis department having the night off, your humble correspondent is fairly certain that’s better than 50 percent from the field; reliable sources (obviously not me) say that’s 51.9 percent shooting. Which yours truly believes is almost 52 percent. Go figure.
* Speaking of Chicago sports fans (and even if we weren’t), all the whining about Bears quarterback Jay Cutler isn’t going to improve his performance or make him go away. But if those folks who decry his very existence want to continue to do so, go right ahead. And they might as well as they’re hitting their head against the wall.
* Speaking of the Bears (who play the Packers Sunday night in Green Bay, they still can lose at Lambeau Field and make the playoffs. The NFL is designed to keep as many teams in postseason contention for as long as possible. Of course, the Bears would have to cooperate and win just about all of their games.
* Speaking of NFL games, the Dallas Cowboys are playing the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Which explains the photo below (hint: It helps to be a Beatles fan).
