It turns out Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose has a hamstring strain suffered in Thursday night’s victory at Toronto. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Rose is day-to-day. Meaning more like game-to-game. Meaning it would seem likely Rose will sit out Saturday night’s game against visiting Indiana in the Bulls’ final home contest before embarking on their annual West Coast road trip that frees up the United Center for the circus. Something says Thibodeau is feeling a bit like a ringmaster these days/games.
* Speaking of the Bulls, the NBA announced its Dec. 25 uniforms (and that includes the Bulls who will be playing on Christmas) will feature the first names of players rather than the last names. Rose’s uniform will have “Derrick” on the back. Apparently “Injury Prone” would take up too much space. Or maybe because Rose hasn’t legally changed his first name to that.
* Chicago Bears receiver Brandon Marshall apparently won’t be boxing a Twitter adversary after all. Marshall said he saw Bears general manager Phil Emery in the hallway at Halas Hall and was informed: “Read your contract.” Maybe Sunday against Minnesota at Soldier Field, Marshall will be able to draw as much attention for his performance as he does off the field for his behavior.
* Speaking of the Marshall saga, coach Marc Trestman said: “I’ve said this many times in here: We’re in a new world of social media. We talk to our guys about it. We don’t police everything that they do. We ask them to take a deep breath before they press that send button. Hopefully they make decisions that are in the best interest of their team. But we’re not perfect, none of us are.” With the possible exception of Marshall — although he probably would be too modest to say so. No?
* Speaking of the NBA (as we were a couple of paragraphs or so ago), in addition to the standings of the Eastern and Western Conference teams (which do find the Bulls tied for first in the East with Toronto at 7-2), there ought to be a standings for draft position for the 2015 draft. If you did so today, No. 1 would be Philadelphia (0-9), No. 2 would be the Los Angeles Lakers (1-8) and No. 3 would be the New York Knicks (2-8). There better be the second coming of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to make having such miserable seasons worthwhile.
* Speaking of a team familiar with miserable seasons, the Cubs’ season opener against the St. Louis Cardinals has been moved to Sunday night, April 5, at Wrigley Field to accommodate ESPN. And because there’s nothing quite like night games in April in Chicago. Well, yes, there is — and it’s generally called “frigid.” Maybe ESPN believes the Wrigley Field renovation includes a dome or some other climate-controlling apparatus.
* Speaking once again of the NBA, commissioner Adam Silver favors legalized gambling on the sport. Hey, it’s one way to generate revenue — I mean interest — in the game.
