Sunday smorgasbord: Jimmy Butler’s drive continues. Toward the basket. Toward a new contract. The Chicago Bulls guard had a career-high/game-high 32 points Saturday against the visiting Indiana Pacers. He had 11 points from the foul line — an indication Butler did more than merely shoot jumpers from various spots on the court. And that’s good for the Bulls. Not so good would be their 99-90 loss to the Pacers.
* Speaking of the Bulls, if they had wanted to give an example of what an uninspired performance looks like, consider the job done. Maybe the Bulls — who embark on a seven-game road trip that begins Monday in Los Angeles vs. the Clippers — didn’t want to leave with fans thinking the team actually could thrive with injured Derrick Rose on the bench.
* Speaking of star athletes, about the only certainty for the Chicago Bears in Sunday’s Soldier Field game against Minnesota is Vikings running back Adrian Peterson won’t be in the lineup. He remains suspended for hitting his 4-year-old son with a switch. And likely will continue to remain suspended after he reportedly opted not to attend a disciplinary meeting Friday with NFL officials. At this rate, Peterson still could be sidelined when the Bears play at Minnesota in the last week of the NFL season.
* Speaking of playing football, some of us still are trying to figure out whether Northwestern’s 43-40 overtime victory at Notre Dame would have been more impressive if the Wildcats had a better or worse record than the 3-6 the Wildcats brought into the game.
* Speaking of the NU-ND contest, Irish coach Brian Kelly opted to go for a two-point conversion that would have given his team a 13-point lead with 10:42 left in the game, even though conventional wisdom says to kick the extra point for an 12-point lead (meaning NU would have needed two touchdowns to take the lead — assuming Notre Dame did not score). Well Notre Dame did not score again in regulation. So much for conventional wisdom. Either Kelly was being unconventional or unwise. Or both.
* Speaking of numbers (and even if we weren’t), here are some from the fine folks at Bovada, (www.Bovada.lv, Twitter: @BovadaLV). They are purely for entertainment purposes. OK, maybe not purely. Anyway, here goes:
