Midweek musings: So the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox finally figured out compensation for Theo Epstein leaving Boston to become the Cubs president of baseball operations. Pitcher Chris Carpenter goes to the Red Sox. If Epstein really was as gifted as some claim he is, the Cubs would have sent Chris Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals to Boston.
* The White Sox enter spring training without any major medical concerns. Yep, all they have are major baseball concerns. Gee, that should be a relief for Sox fans.
* The NFL Combine in Indianapolis is just like the Pro Bowl in Hawaii: merely an excuse for media to go to some exotic spot. OK, maybe not. Another major difference: At the Combine, players really are trying their best.
* High school football player Davonte Neal committed to Notre Dame Tuesday (Feb. 21) hours after he was supposed to hold an announcement event at his former grade school in Arizona. When more than 30 minutes passed after the scheduled event was to occur, an assembly with 600 elementary-school youngsters, family and friends was dismissed. Something says this is one time (probably the only time) that Irish coach Brian Kelly was willing to accept some tardiness.
* New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin has denied he is dating reality television personality Kim Kardashian. Her people also have denied the two are dating. Somewhere there’s a joke about all that and a box-and-one defense, but we will leave that for someone else to deal with.
Thursday’s “Sports & Torts” — co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris — figures to be a great show. And not because of those two. Because of the figures in the studio other than those two. Nicole Moneer Guerrero — a friend of the show and a bikini competitor of world-class proportions (and lovely proportions they are) and a personal trainer and fitness guru — will bring her radiant personality along to brighten up things. As if that’s not sufficient pulchritude for the talkzone.com studio, Nicole has promised to bring along three of her clients; two of them are scheduled to participate in The Arnold Sports Festival March 1-4 in Columbus, Ohio. Nicole also is heading to The Arnold, where she again will be among the featured attractions at the bodybuilding.com booth. To check out Nicole (and others) and The Arnold on the bodybuilding.com site, you can click here.
Also on “Sports & Torts” at noon (Chicago time) on talkzone.com is legendary broadcaster Joe Garagiola. If he isn’t the best baseball player-turned-broadcaster (meaning best broadcaster and not best ballplayer), then some of us don’t know who is. Plus he hosted televison game shows, was on NBC’s “Today” show and elevated the Westminster Kennel Club dog show to new heights on TV. His wit and wisdom were among the best of any generation of broadcasters. His ability to spin an anecdote was nonpareil (while Joe may know what that means, the person typing this probably does not).
Persons interested in being part of the “Sports & Torts” experience by becoming an advertiser on the show may contact David Spada (hey, he’s an attorney and should know something about business, no?) by email at david@injuryinillinois.com.
Tuesday was Mardi Gras. Here is a little video from one of our favorites, April Rose, with some footage that captures the flavor of the event:
Anything to do with models tends to work around here. In that Playboy Playmate Jaime Edmondson tweeted about the following video that featured one of her friends, it was hard to resist running this (OK, in all honesty, there was not much of an effort to resist this or anything tangentially related to Jaime, Playboy, models, etc.). Anyway, the editorial staff found the following amusing (in case there ever was any doubt about what some of us find humorous):
