I’m a Believer — That Cubs, Sox Might Struggle

March 1, 2012 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts: Thinking one way to pay homage to Davey Jones — the singer with the 1960s pop music group The Monkees who died Wednesday (Feb. 29) at age 66 — would be for the Chicago White Sox and/or Cubs to play “I’m a Believer” at games. Given the relatively low expectations that many fans of each team have for 2012, more suitable might be a tune titled “I’m a Deceiver.”

* Speaking of baseball (well, we were before that video), it appears expanded playoffs for 2012 will be here shortly (if they already aren’t by the time you read this). It’s unclear how adding one wild-card team per league to postseason play will affect the Cubs or Sox — other than possibly larger late-season crowds when they play on the road against teams in contention for that extra berth.

* The Cubs are employing a team psychologist. Something says they could use one for the fans as well. If the Cubs were to employ a little creativity, the psychologist could be available at Wrigley Field on game days. If that’s not a revenue stream …

* Harry Caray’s Tavern, Navy Pier will be this year’s base for the 14th annual Toast to Harry. Among those scheduled to lead the toast at 5:45 p.m. Chicago time are Cubs owner Tom Ricketts, “Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks, Dutchie Caray and others. More information is available by clicking here.

* The Bulls’ victory Wednesday at San Antonio over the Spurs means very little as far as the postseason is concerned. Well, unless the Bulls can make it past the Miami Heat to the NBA Finals and San Antonio is the Western Conference opponent.

* Northwestern’s 75-73 loss to Ohio State Wednesday should be enough to convince selectors to have the Wildcats in the postseason. Hello, NIT.
