The man who loves the spotlight found the heat a little too much in Miami.
Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen — known for headline-making statements during his tenure with the Chicago White Sox — apologized Tuesday (April 10) for comments regarding Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. By suspending Guillen for five games (with pay that reportedly will go to human-rights causes), the Marlins hope to defuse a situation that enflamed emotions after Guillen was quoted by Time magazine as saying he loved Castro and admired him for being in power so long.

Maybe Ozzie was hoping to be named manager of Cuba’s Olympic baseball team?
Would the outcry have been different if he had called Castro a “fag,” a term he used during his White Sox tenure that provided some hot water for Guillen?
“I’m here on my knees to apologize,” Guillen said at a press conference that also attracted protestors outside . “I’m very sorry about the problem, what happened. I will do everything in my power to make it better. … When you make a mistake like this, you can’t sleep.”
Marlins president David Samson said the team never considered firing Guillen, who said his comments to a Time reporter were msinterpreted.
“It was a personal mistake of the thing I had in my mind and what I said,” Guillen said in Spanish. “What I wanted to say in Spanish, I said in English in a wrong way.
“I was saying I cannot believe somebody who hurt so many people over the years is still alive.
“I’m going to be a Miami guy for the rest of my life. I want to walk in the street with my head up and feel not this bad, the way I feel now.”
Baseball cmmissioner Bud Selig said the remarks “have no place in our game” and were “offensive to an important part of the Miami community and others throughout the world.”
“As I have often said, baseball is a social institution with important social responsibilities,” Selig said in a statement. “All of our 30 clubs play significant roles within their local communities, and I expect those who represent Major League Baseball to act with the kind of respect and sensitivity that the game’s many cultures deserve.”
“This is the biggest mistake I’ve made so far in my life,” Guillen said.
But he will have plenty of time to make a bigger one.

* Just a guess that the Chicago Cubs will have trouble winning games when they fall behind 5-0 in the first inning, as was the case Tuesday night at Wrigley Field vs. the Milwaukee Brewers. On the bright side (from a Cubs perspective), it would appear the bleacher fans in left field are in midseason form in throwing back homers hit by the visiting team.

Some might think this reminder merely is an excuse to run another photo of Katarina. OK, if that’s a crime, then guilty as charged.
